best n/a mitsu engine
best n/a mitsu engine
good evening gentlemen,
There's a local racing championship that happens here that i'm hoping to join, and my hope is to enter with a Mitsubishi, and not go down the common route of using a Honda, but quite frankly i'm losing on that hope since i can barely find street mods for them not to mention race spec mods. so i'm hoping you guys have more insight on this.
i want to compare the 4g92 Mivec DOHC AND THE 4G93 DOHC. Note that turbos are not allowed in the series and there are 2 classes, 1801cc - 2000cc and below 1800 cc, so no bigger displacements either. I need to be **** a bit and ask you to post the engine's name and then answer each of my questions as far as your knowledge goes
-how rare the engine is.
-how expensive the engine is.
-how the engine responds to mods.
-how readily available are race spec mods.
-how reliable and durable the engine is, i don't want it to go belly up from the first race.
also i might consider the 4g18 since this is what we get in our lancers and probably will be cheaper, so if you guys have any idea about this engine list it ahead, and any engines that you suggest also list in the same way.
4G92-MIVEC DOHC 16 Valve
Total Displacement - 1597cc
Bore - 81.0mm
Stroke - 77.5mm
Compression Ratio - 11:1
Maximum Output - 128 kW (174 PS; 172 bhp) @ 7,500 rpm
Maximum Torque - 167 N·m (123 ft·lbf) @ 7,000 rpm
4G93 DOHC 16 Valve
Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI)
Total Displacement - 1834cc
Bore - 81.0mm
Stroke - 89.0mm
Compression Ratio - 12:1
Maximum Output - 96 kW (131 PS; 129 bhp) / 103 kW (140 PS; 138 bhp) @ 6,000 rpm
Maximum Torque - 177 N·m (131 ft·lbf) @ 3,750 rpm / 181 N·m (133 ft·lbf) @ 3,500 rpm
The SOHC 4G18 displaces 1.6 L (1584 cc) with a bore and stroke of 76.0 mm x 87.3 mm. It is a 4-valve per cylinder engine. Output is 105 PS net at 6000 rpm (Middle East specifications), 122 ps gross (Gulf Countries specification), 96 PS net with 151 NM (European specifications). (we get the 122hp version)

Once again I am saddened that Mitsubishi does not support racing for Mitsubishi owners competing against other makes like Honda. Why aren't Lancers and Accords racing against each other?

but that is only if making the whole car would be cheaper than making a honda, even though i prefer mitsubishi's i don't have the luxury of nit picking.
From where i stand what i can do with the 4G18 is exhaust and intake (custom or ready made not really an issue) light weight pulley, camshaft with 275 degree (that's for street, couldn't find a racing cam yet) fuel regulator and TB, and RPW race headers (only race spec part i found till now).
i have no idea how well would the 4G18 respond to these mods, if i manage to get 150 whp that would be amazing but seems far fetched.
anyways i'm waiting for any input, going to research till i save up money, maybe will start this project by mid next year.
and of course have to check availability around here and price, probably will have to import it. need to keep the price of the car and engine swap low so i can point the money to make the car accepted by the regulations of the series first and on the mods second, not to mention that they might not accept the car if they felt that the engine isn't well mounted or could be dangerous.
gonna look up the engine specs now
EDIT: I like it, but i'm doubtful about it fitting comfortably in this tiny shoe, errr car lol

I did some research on it a few years back, it'll fit, the engine is quite compact albeit not as snug as a 4-cyl but you would achieve some good power from it. Look into it a little more, i've seen the swap in that generation Lancer/Mirage. But if not i would go with the 4G92 MIVEC or maybe the 4G69 from the 04-06 Ralliarts, that is a good engine and also rev happy.

to have an idea about the 4g18 this is an acceleration.
yes i will be checking it out and doing a lot of research, got loads of time before i actually start searching for a car and start building it. they have strict regulations that's why i'll have to make sure to consult them before stepping into anything if the engine turns out to be in a nice price range, and i think they might be available from the VR galants here if i'm not mistaken, but that also might be the DOHC not the Mivec.
4G69 would've been my first choice but unfortunately it's a 2.4l.
the 4G92 from what i read on other forums has 130-140 whp stock which is really good if it were true, but doesn't respond well to bolt on mods. That's the reason i decided to make this thread to see if anyone has first hand experience with it.
and from searching through the net i find Mivec engines to be pricy, have to find a garage that deals with
to make sure if i should rule out the 92 or not.

just did a quick check on wikipedia cuz it's late and i'm about to go to bed, will research it more tomorrow, the sohc seams really weak and the dohc is also weak only slightly better but it peaks out at 4700 rpm on the pajero so i'm guessing they made it more for torque, i think there is a chance i could get my hand on these locally too.
got any experience with modding these engines?? do they have racing parts available and relatively cheap?? and how well do they respond to basic bolt on's??

Ohhhhhh yes right right i forgot that 2.4L would be too big, my bad. the 4G18 revs well for what it is. But yea there was a twin turbo version in the Galant but it wasn't MIVEC.

FTO 200hp motor, if its easy to find would be a good motor.
What are the class restrictions? Power to weight limits? If none, most power for lightest body is what you want.

weight limit is 1000 kg, power i'm pretty sure it's "all you can eat".

Just posting this since I own one. If FTOs are hard to come by. Thought about the ST170 motor (Focus SVT here in the states)?
Rate Horsepower : 170 hp @ 7000 rpm
Torque : 145 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm
Redline : 7100 rpm
Mods bump it to a good 190-200 hp. And can be mated to a RWD transmission (Pinto trans) if you want to.
What chassis are you looking into?

but i just noticed that the max torque on the 4G92 comes at 7000 RPM and it's 123 foot pound, is that a good idea?? or i won't need so much torque in racing?
Edit: sorry missed your last question, i'm planning on using a lancer ce coupe.
and about mod restriction the block and heads must be stock and no Forced Induction, dry sumping not allowed, the position and mounting method of the engine must confirm to the original model being raced, other than that the exhast shouldn't run through the driver compartment and should exit at the rear, single throttle body and manifolds should fit directly to the port faces of the cylinder head, and finally the radiators remain within the overall periphery of the vehicle, what ever that means.
