Race/Fire Suit Discussion
On the "trying things on" note--is there anywhere in Texas that stocks this kind of stuff?
Luckily, I found a suit that fits and seems fairly comfy, so now I'm more worried about all the other stuff--mostly the helmet and the shoes. a) I'm a girl and b) I have relatively small feet for a girl, so seeing everything in dude sizes (many of which look a lot bigger than my feet!) is not so awesome.

A couple updates:
The suit I ordered was not in stock, and the guy I talked with told me that I probably needed the next larger size anyway. They are working on tracking one down, but I am not holding my breath.
Looks like US Racegear (I think it's the company that comes to all the NASA Great Lakes races) is in Cinci - only an 8 hour drive from here. May drive or fly down if that is my only hope.
Also - Motovicity Distribution is here in MI and I know a guy that works for them. I am checking to see if they carry any product lines for Sparco, Momo, Alpinestars, OMP, Bell, etc. . .
Thank you everyone for your help. It is greatly appreciated!

edit - Also looks like TeamTech (whose harnesses I've used for 5 years) has their own line of race suits and they are like 15 minuts away. Will have to check them out. From the website though it looks like I should be driving a dirt oval car or monster truck to wear one of theirs - looks like they cater to the really hard core/down and dirty racers. I will post a report when I get to see their stuff in person.

MSR's not too far (well, about as far as anything is from dang Tyler). I might look into that, then. Thanks!
your one of the most active people in the motorsports section and have never heard of the 24 hours of Lemons?

you must be stuck in the woods all the time or something.

24 hours of Lemons: a 24 hour endourance race. competitors are required to spend no more then 500 dollars on the vehicle and all the mods on it. some safety equipm, ent is required and not included in the 500 dollar limit. making your car into a "theme" seems to be the big thing with Lemons, and they give points based on how cool it is.
chump car is another series like that, geared more towards the racing aspect rather then making it a big entertaining game like Lemons is. it is hugely popular because you can race without having to buy a expensive race car.
also, Lemons brings a car crusher to events. if you cheat or they don't like your car they crush it. chump car doesn't do that, making chump car more ideal for someone who wants to keep trying.

Heh, what KevinD said. Our car's a huge lilac bunny rabbit.
heh, what kevind said. Our car's a huge lilac bunny rabbit.

Rob spends so much damn time on EURO sites and you tube rally videos about elite driving and motorsports it completely missed his radar
. You do read other magazines besides WRC right?

i bought the Sparco Jade Top last year. it fit great but was too thick and heavy for my liking, so i sold it after trying it on. i'm looking to spend a little more this year and get a lighter suit.

SADLY the culture of the car is huge here in the states, which is does not reflect on the Motorsport at all.
I mean the WTCC - IRC- WRC - Le Mans - Formula - Rally RAID you name it type of races generally better there. And many times not even a contest...
Only thing is good in the states, are the indy - truck off roading and the bikes; both dirt and tarmac, other then that....
and i feel terribly sorry if didnt count the NASCAR - drag and brothers / detroit based/ races to worth to watch for me. I know i need time to adjust to the American motorsport life style ... LOL
sum it up:

I never saw in my entire life someone driving , closed car with a helmet shield is closed or even on it.
So there is no difference in that case between the open and closed, only your face will be more open for the fire if you dont have a fire proof /FIA certificated/ balaclava.
You get used to it after a while. There are two downsides. The bigger one is that it gets even hotter inside the helmet. The second part, to a lesser effect is that it does insulate out the noise more and you can't hear as much. But it is minor.
If you value your eyes more than comfort, you get used to the setup pretty quickly, just like anything else that is new.
