Street notes
The tires on the M3 are corded and I've been too lazy to throw the other set on, so I've been driving the Evo around the last few days. It's a pleasant surprise that with the shocks turned down, and the loud/worn down Dunlops replaced by fresh-ish RE11s, the car is still pretty good on the street. I don't think I'd have Motons on the car if it was going to be my daily (I drive over 35K a year) but I'd do Ohlins with lower rates, for sure. The exhaust is maybe a tick loud, but only maybe.
The only thing that really hurts the streetability right now is the HP+'s, which are god awful f*ing loud on the street. Thankfully my commute is mostly highway so I don't have to hit the brakes much but in stop and go stuff, they are brutal. Anything less than full pedal pressure and they squeal like crazy.
When I had my WRX, I took the suspension off in the winter, put the stock stuff back on, and dailyed it with some winter tires. If I end up dailying the Evo in the winter at all (unlikely - the remotes make it a lot more annoying to do the suspension swap) I'd definitely put the stock pads back on, maybe with someone's old takeoff rotors just so I don't have the transfer layers fighting amongst themselves.
All in all, I'm really happy with the car.

Why brake squeal? Because racecar.
Okay, that's getting a bit played out, but whatever.
Some thoughts:
Greg drove really well this weekend. Considering how much you have left to do on the car, it's making me realize why the Evo is considered the better STU car. For the NSTC with Greg hitting 61 on the fast offsets, it makes me realize that we were really giving up time by not shifting to 3rd...even though we were on the 18's. We were topping out at roughly 56mph through there. Ouch. I know Iman was shifting to 3rd on the 17's, but he said it was pretty sketchy to get it all done.
My next thought is that I really wish our Maxq was working. Shane got one of the last versions that has bluetooth and a couple of other gadgetry, but since they're out of business now we can't get any support. Essentially he's stopped playing with it. I might try to get it from him and see if I can get it working. Right now all we have is the speed data from the Contour GPS. There's supposed to be a way to use the data with the Maxq software, just need to figure it out. I know Shane sometimes uses that Harry's Lap Timer, but we don't utilize that enough either.
Nice writeup John, puts mine to shame. See you on Sunday!

Why SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE because racecar
Event #17: WDCR/SCCA @ Fedex, 8-7-2011
Setup (new stuff in bold):
Moton Clubsports
front: 0/7 compression, 0/7 rebound
rear: 0/6 compression, 0/7 rebound
600/800 springs
-3 / -1, 0 toe
245-40-17 Dunlop Z1s on 17x9 SSR Type C RS, 15mm spacers in the front
32/32 psi
WORKS 24mm rear swaybar on full stiff
Conditions: 90s and generally despicable
No new setup stuff for this event. Josh (piknockout) co-drove since Ben was at a wedding and Josh couldn't drive his STi because he needed to carry stuff down so that it could be brought to Nebraska.

Don't underestimate the power of the dark side
After waiting through the first 3 heats, including watching a Keizer wheel break, it finally came around to our heat. I was originally planning to run 2nd driver, but Josh reminded me of the rain and I said I'd prefer to run 1st. (Thanks Josh!)
The car felt pretty good, a little loose on the cold tires. I overshot the first fast braking zone and DNF'd... crap. I ended up with a 52.0 raw. So, just need to clean that up and push a little harder in the first section... right?
Josh went out and ran a 50.3, +1. For reference, ST had been won with a 50.6 and STS (Ian Baker, always in the hunt nationally) had been won with a 50.0. To catch Ian in PAX would have meant low 49's - maybe possible once Josh got a feel for the car. Shane ran a 51.5+2. So after first runs I was nowhere (DNF), Josh was 1st and Shane was 2nd.
Then just as first runs are winding down - it starts raining. F*. Shane manages to get in a 52.6 just as it starts getting bad. I get a clean 55.0 as the water has turned the sealed part of the lot into an ice skating rink. Shortly after the event has to stop due to lightning - all the courseworkers have to come off the course and all that. Ugh.
The rain stopped and things were sunny for a little while. And then it started pouring again. I tried "gravel" on the ACD for 3rd runs and ended up with a 58.4 with some sweet opposite lock dancing (waiting on the video from Josh's camera) - conditions were clearly worse. I don't think either of us liked things better with the ACD set to gravel so it went back to Tarmac for last runs. My head was far out of the game at this point and I was in "my day is blown, let's screw around" mode rather than really trying to get a decent wet time. Bad habit!
My last run sucked... just experimenting to see how early I could get on the gas and mostly failing. 62.x after a DNF somewhere.
Josh went out for his last run and I rode along. The start was at the bottom of the lot, and as such we got some pretty serious tributaries going on...

Josh's 4th run was deeply entertaining. I'll wait for the video though.
Not sure I learned anything - but I'll try:
* Magic diffs can only do so much in the rain when you're getting on the gas too early and not pointed in the right direction.
* Don't get down when it starts raining or you'll never improve.
* Don't forget the cookies.
Next weekend should be a doubleheader... here's hoping for better weather.

This is what happens when you try to hit the brakes while the wheel is still slightly turned and the one side is fully loaded. Instant spinnage.

Hold on... Josh in an Evo? Go back to your silly flat-engined cars!
Seriously, though, I'm curious as to what you thought. John's setup is from my old car and it's very similar to the setup we were running on the car I drove at Nats last year (bars are the main thing).

Don't worry, it's only temporary.
I really don't have a lot to say about the car at this point. I only got one dry run this event. Seemed good, a little pushy, but that could have a lot to do with how I was driving the car. Not sure yet though. Perhaps I'll get to run it again and have more of an opinion at a later time. But it's definitely a quick setup as show by Greg at the previous event.

Event #18: CDC @ Winchester, 8-13-2011
Setup (new stuff in bold):
Moton Clubsports
front: 3/7 compression, 3/7 rebound
rear: 6/6 compression, 3/7 rebound
600/800 springs
-3 / -1, 0 toe
245-40-17 Dunlop Z1s on 17x9 SSR Type C RS, 15mm spacers in the front
36/36 psi
WORKS 24mm rear swaybar on full stiff
Conditions: 80s, humid, sunny then rainy
I got to this event a little late thanks to being up until 4 AM the night before. No coursewalk, but the course was pretty straightforward so no worries there. I showed up in time to run 3 runs in the 3rd heat in the afternoon and 3 runs in the 4th.
The last time I ran at Winchester, I hit 12 cones in 4 runs - 0 clean runs. Could I improve this time? Not so much...
I started off with a 41.1, +3. I was hitting the inside cones in the opening skidpad with the rear tires. But I was shooting to catch Ryan’s STU (I think) STi and he was sitting on a 41.5 at the time (I think) so I was cautiously optimistic.
My second run started out okay, but I got on the gas a littttle too early and got a little bit more b00st than I was ready for. The car pushed out a bit and wiped out most of the right side of the finish box. It’s listed as a DNF since it was a cone after the finish (CDC rules) but it would have been +6 at an SCCA event.
My third run I was really focused on keeping it clean, not knowing what was going to happen in the last heat weather wise. I ended up with a 41.74 which dropped me into 3rd in the index, behind Ryan and Brian K (SMF national champion 2010 and 2011). But it was clean at least
I had slowed down a lot on runs 2 and 3 trying to get a clean run in and was hoping to get a few runs to attack with abandon in heat 4. Alas... weather. The skies opened up. I thought about bailing, knowing that my times would not improve but I figured after last week’s poor rain performance I should probably get some practice in. And I had time to get the video going...
Wet run 1 - 43.7+1. Felt pretty good but there was more grip than I was using. Wet run 2, 43.1, +2. Wet run 3 - 43.5+1. So I hit less cones in those 3 runs, but had zero clean ones.
Total across all 6 runs: 14 cones. I was reminded of a really old video game, Rise of the Triad (back in the days of my 386) which had a “bull in a china shop bonus” for when you killed all of something. I think I would definitely have gotten such an award if they handed them out
Wet run #2... great camera angle! You can at least see the course layout in the bottom left.

Conditions: 90s and sunny (overcast in the morning)
DC does overall season championships by class. You get 12 points for 1st, 9 for 2nd, 7 for 3rd and so on. You drop the two lowest events. The 1st two slots in DC’s STU standings were set - Shane 1st, Josh 2nd. Going into the last points event I had three 4ths, two 5ths and an 8th on that particularly bad day. Vell, in an STU STi, had a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, and two 6ths. So with two drops I had 23 points and he had 22. I needed to finish ahead of him heads-up to win - otherwise I’d tie (and lose the tiebreak) or lose straight up.
There was a risk of weather in the morning, and it rained on the first heat, but second heat was totally dry. I was codriving with Ben again and drove first.
My first run, I shortcut the course in the top left corner. The crest of the hill threw me off because for once I was looking ahead, and I looked past a cone I needed to go through. Doh! I had a 53.9 but it was a DNF.
Second run I was just trying to stay on course to have something to build on. I stayed on course, but was pretty timid - 55.0. At this point - Josh had a 51.8, Shane had a 52.4+2, and Vell had a 55.2. Vell and I were also both losing to AJ in his ST Civic (54.2). Work to do!
Third run felt better but was slower... 55.2. This is one of the many times I really wish I had set up my data acquisition. I have no idea why it was slower. Oh, and I’m writing this a month late so some of the details are lost
Unfortunately, the rest of the class got faster: Josh down to 51.5, Shane to 51.6+1, AJ to 53.6, Vell to 54.0. Crap!
OK... one run for all the 2011 marbles. I started out pretty well, but in the tight section after the top left corner I heard a thud. I was pretty sure I hit something, but turned it up a notch just in case it was an unrelated thud. I hauled *** through the second half of the course, but hit the last cone on the course - outside finish cone. I was even more depressed when I got the time - 53.4 - good enough to beat Vell and give me 3rd on the season. So somehow I found 1.6 seconds of raw time and had 90% of the run I needed when I needed it - but could not stay clean.
Josh ended up on his 51.5 (waiving a rerun to save his tires for nationals) and Shane (who had two reruns IIRC) got down to a 51.3. Yipes! AJ got down to a 52.9, and Vell ended up coning a 53.6 and sitting on his 54.0.
Takeaways:
* f’ing run the data acquisition! Every time I don’t, I deeply regret it.
* My best raw (53.4) was still slower than AJ in his ST civic (52.9) and about two seconds off Shane (51.3) and Josh (51.5). Man, I have work to do.
Video from another car just to give you a feel for the course:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoP-FLQz3pY
So - I ended up 4th in the DC STU standings. Not what I was hoping for, but not surprising given how long it took for things to come together. I was sort of encouraged coming up with all that time on my last run, just didn’t quiiiite click.

Conditions: 80s and sunny
I did this event because it was local and easy to get to and I could finally show my wife’s parents what autocross is like. I left the RE11s on, too lazy to change tires. The course was pretty painful, very tight. I couldn’t even get out of the start box without coming to a stop and re-launching, some combination of a big car + crappy turning radius. I didn’t bring a sprayer and the ‘stones were barking. I ended up eking out a 34.9 but couldn’t improve, 19th out of 65 in the index. My wife’s parents enjoyed themselves though.

This was a bigger course (yay) but with lots of painful elements (boo). There were a total, I think, of 6 elements of 90 degrees or more, with a couple of them coming close to 120 degrees. Lots of sections to go back into turbo lag land and fight out of it. It drove a bit better than it walked, but it was still a bit on the painful side. One nice thing - this was the first autocross with cool weather in a while. I didn’t need to spray my tires at any point.
First run, just exploratory - 47.8. I took the tight stuff at the beginning pretty okay, but overshot a few braking zones on the back side. Run 2 was the same - 47.4 with two fairly serious overshoots. I felt based on this run that there was a low 46 out there.
As I was coming up to the line for run 3, I heard Vell get a 47.3... doh! As with run 2, an overshoot or two early. While pushing to make up for it I hit a cone in the fast slalomy section. 47.6 +1, ugh. Last run I didn't take the opening slow stuff that well, but at least didn't make any serious mistakes. Good enough for the class win - 47.1. Woohoo!
I did end up getting straight timed by AJ in his ST Civic though. He had a 46.9. I checked the PAX standings after heat 2 and I was 11th or so out of ~50 and he was 2nd. So that made me feel better at least. Final results are still not posted though.
edit: results posted. 1st of 8 in STU, but 24/98 in PAX :| I am disappoint.

Where's my power?
I found this dyno chart posted by McCall a while back (2007).
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/4448360-post543.html
Cliff notes: 302 whp, 280 wtq
Looking at the dyno in more detail:
http://oi53.tinypic.com/289hlzp.jpg
And comparing it to mine (after the mods):

(note: both Mustang dynos)
I ended up with the following table:

That 3000 RPM bit is a bit depressing. I knew I was down, but hadn’t calculated until now how far down I was. It’s not just 30 whp peak - it’s 30+ whp/wtq across the board. F*. I really need to do that compression/leakdown check soon. That’s a ton of power to leave on the table. I think this and the diff rebuild are the 1 and 2 priorities for next year.
Thread I started a little while ago when the car was still stock:
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...any-ideas.html
And for reference, someone who got 315 whp on the same dyno running an 11.9 at 114 mph
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/dr...1-9-114-a.html
I'll probably also get a "BSP" tune for the winter just to see what kind of power it makes with the gloves off.

Hmm...300whp for an STU car seems a bit high, especially considering you can't touch boost. A lot of mildly modded cars (TBE, intake, etc) around here are making around 300whp on GST's Mustang Dyno with 22-23psi.
