Evo 5 Mt Washington video (record attempt)
Evo 5 Mt Washington video (record attempt)
Well, It has surfaced after all these years, Jeff Denmead's run up Mt Washington in a brand new Ralliart Australia group N Evo 5 I crewed on this car for most of it's American events. The announcer made one mistake, The homoligated roll cage was built by Ralliart with the car.

Another useful tool for trying to learn this hill, thanks!
I've been trying to watch any footage i can about the hill. It would have been nice to continue to watch Sprongls video.

Jeff is one hell of a driver! I have ridden several times with him and he deserves our attention. The car was sold to a rally competitor that keeps it as a collectable. That car was really special. I drove it a few times and it was brutal. The 4.8 gear with lots of torque made it a light switch to drive. I hope Jeff makes it back next year to climb Mt Washington again. If Travis Pastrana wants to claim the record of America's extreme driver he needs to win against drivers of Jeff's ability.

Remember Mt Washington recorded the highest wind speed ever recorded on planet earth (231mph) back in 1934. The drop off over the right side of the auto road goes down nearly 2000". It is much much more dangerous than Pikes Peak!
Given this video was done 12 years ago, and given how Fuel technology has moved on, suspension technology has moved on, turbo technology has moved on and ecu technology has moved on, and tire technology has moved on, Id say there would be a minimum of 40 sec left in the bag - Minimum!! This was a 6:48 (I think). In practive I did a 6:52 and was the fastest O/all. But come race day Sprongle got me (he had issues in Practice), I was a little sloppy trying too hard in this video and probably left 10 secs on the table this day. Expect Pastrana's (very-unofficial) time to be eclipsed and smashed, and especially Sprongles record time of 12 years ago when this Video was made. (Caveat: and if I wasnt so hung over like I was that morning I may been faster for sure, damn you cheap beer and good camp fire crowd!)
I love Mt Washington, if you can do it, push everything out of the way to get on the start line as it is an event that is organised very intermittently, and it may be on next year or it may be on again in another 12-20 years time.
Those really are 2000 foot drops off the edge, and crazy as it seems, that's the point that is the most dangerous, and that is where I snick 4th gear with the car moving around under you. A Honda Type R went off there and it bounced a quarter mile down the hill.
Thanks to Dave for posting, Dave has been a good friend (and good crew guy) for probably going on a couple of decades now.
And many thanks for the kind words.

Jeff,
First off i'd like to thank you for making your video public. It is a huge help to have a fast pace, full run video to study.
I would totally agree about doing anything to get to the starting line. I have been obsessed with running this hill since i heard it was coming back. I have heard so many stories from all the hillclimbers over the years about this ultimate challange. I am so excited and thankful to get a chance to run this event!
Ps. Being hung over and running up a hill seems to be common place for hillclimbers!
Oh, and if there are any tips that you would like to divulge please feel free to pm me.

I am glad everyone can experience riding with Jeff on that historic run. My first experience with Jeff was sitting in the passenger seat at Lime Rock Park in his new 1998 Impreza 2.5 while he showed me how to drive sideways at full throttle into the uphill turn! Jeff always put teaching driving skills first when he was at a event. Whether at a local autocross or a race weekend he loves teaching driving control.
