Road Atlanta with NASA-SE
Road Atlanta with NASA-SE
Well this past weekend I attended the Hotlanta Challenge at Road Atlanta with NASA-SE. I was driving in HPDE3 and as is too often the case, I was the lone Evo at the event.
Outside of being crazy hot, it was a great event and I had a lot of fun. There was a major incedent Saturday in one of the race groups where a Radical got run over by a Mustang, literally. The Radical driver was lifeflighted out, but Sunday morning the news came in that he was going to be fine and might even get released from the hospital Sunday evening. That was great to hear.
I showed up at the track with one major change to the car. I installed the Weir Performance 12-plate rear diff pack the week before replacing the OEM plate setup. I was looking to further eliminate that pesky Evo understeer.
Well, it took me several sessions to re-adjust to the car, this ended up being a major change. I realized I had grown so used to immediately going to maintenance throttle and working the steering looking for grip when the car started to slide in a corner that it was like breaking a bad habit. With the new LSD setup I realized I simply needed to make a good clean turn in and as soon as the car was pointed towards apex start rolling strong into throttle. The rear end will now bite and the car will rotate.
Turn 7 at Road Atlanta is the only really flat grinder on the course. It is also very important because it starts that famous 8/10's of a mile back straight, so getting through it fast and clean means lots more speed in the last 1/2 of the straight.
Here's a little vid I put together of the car before and after the LSD upgrade. Same alignment and suspension. In the second one (with the Weir upgrade) notice how hard the car lunges out of the corner on that 944 in front of me.

Damn man I didn't think you were going this weekend. Looks like the diff helped out. How were your laptimes in the heat?
Looking forward to December to finally have some fun with you buddy (crosses fingers)!

Really interested in getting back to CMP with all those flat understeering nighmare turns and seeing how it does now.
