SCCA SM Clarification

So my car has been down the last two years and has not competed in an autocross since summer of 2009.

I was in the SM class back then. I have not changed too much but a few things are different on the car. I read over the rules and it sounds like I would still be in SM but I am not 100% sure. I was hoping a few of you guys can give my mods a look over and share your thoughts on what class to be in.

I race to have fun so dont really care about my class but get frustrated when people come up and yell at me for being illigal for the class (when they could have told me nicely as I have no f*ckin clue).

Crash bars would put you in prepared IIRC, but not likely anyone would know if you're just a mid-pack kinda guy.

no rear seats MIGHT put you in SSM but thats off the top of my head, i havent read those rules too much so i cant comment on the crash beams (although that sounds like a ***** protest to me)

The evo doesnt belong in SSM, thats for 2 seaters. SM allows you to remove the rear seats but the side panels must stay in place.

So sounds like the crash bars are the only thing putting me out of SM.

It appears FP may be my best class to run in without the crash bars.

Yeah the only thing of violation that I see as far as running in SM is just the crash bars.

You need to maintain the stock crash bars but are aloud to trim / make alterations to them to make what ever front or rear bumper fit. You just have to make sure that the end product after all trimming and cutting weights within 1lb of the stock unaltered weight. This is usually done by welding some weight back on it after your done trimming.

If your not looking to be competitive and just out there to have fun then I wouldnt worry about it. The most they can do is protest you and you will not get the place you ran in... but if your doing it for fun then who cares.

And Chu... Even though Hoosiers are run by all in SM doesnt mean you need them to be competitive. Im running 255/35 Z1's and im having a blast making guys on Hoosiers sweat seeing me post up times that they are on their Hoosiers.

You can be competitive with what ever you have as long as your out there having fun thats all that counts. Good luck this season bud

You're gonna have to be at about 2500lbs to be somewhat competitive in FP.

For nationals or just in general? I have now desire to be in any national events at this point. I enjoy the more laid back local events.

I think I will need to dig around and see if I can find my crash bars to modify. I can run with those in SM at least unitill I get better performing tires and the Evo goes on a diet.

Appreiate the help everyone

It really depends on your local competition. If your local FP contingent is as fast or faster than your local SM contingent then you will need to prep your car further. If you plan to continue running street tires then your best option is to drop weight. You're probably already making too much power for street tires.

You could also run some Kumho v710's. They are just as fast as the Hoosiers and last twice as long almost.

You could also talk to your SM folks locally and see if they mind you running without your crash beams.

Yes, I am running Craigs old car.

This will be the last pair of street tires this car see's. I drive the car less then 1000 miles a year now.

I will be going to my first race of the year this Sunday now that the cars back together. I will see what kind of competition I have then. I regestered as SM and will notch up the front crash bar to get it on for the event.
