Watkins Glen for beginner?

Whats your opinion on going Watkins for a beginne rtrack day? I went to my first event at NJMP Thunderbolt on the 26th of Feb. and was interested in doing another HPDE. I am skeptical since Watkins has a few turns with some guard rails. Thunderbolt is a motorcycle course with plenty of run off so its seems a safer option. I am just limited to the number of events NJMP has available...

The Glen can be overwhelming for a beginner. Very big and fast with no room for error. Yet I would not miss out on a chance to drive it.

The Glen is an awesome track! Be sure to have good brakes, engage your brain, and have a great time.

Remember most HPDE incidents are self inflicted.

If you drive with respect for your limits and for the track you will be fine. If you get over confident and go over your bounds, then yes it could be easy to do lots of damage at Watkins Glen.

That said, the Glen is my favorite East Coast track, so I would go for it.

Eric, do it! you will love the Glen. As long as you drive in control, which you should be doing, you will be fine on any track. I cut my teeth on Shenandoah which IMO is much less forgiving than WGI.

A bunch of us from the PCD event should be heading up there this year. I know I have two dates on my schedule with GVC BMWCCA.. 5/4 thru 5/6 & 9/21 thru 9/23.

My very first HPDE was at the Glen almost 10 years ago. In the beginning I was lost and it took me a couple of sessions just to remember the turns, 3.4 miles of track is a lot.

Just take it easy, listen to the instructor, don't try to break the track record on your first HPDE and you will be fine.

^ One day (Friday) might not be for newbs, but the other two days should. I am instructing both days so they better be taking students, lol.

Watkins Glen is a great track...neck and neck with Mosport for my favorite..

Watch some video's on YouTube or Vimeo and it will help a lot

Here's one of my favorites (but not necessarily the best for learning )

I did my first HPDE at the Glen as well. It's a excellent track with a high pucker factor. On my last session it started to drizzle a bit adding to my nervousness. I watched a bunch of videos over and over again to learn the track. However, you cannot see how much of an elevation change there is...roller coaster-like.

As reference, I was at the Thunderbolt event as well which was my third event. I have also ran on Nelson Ledges and done a few wheel-to-wheel ice races in upstate NY.

I say got for it if you can
