I just bought a couple of these about a week ago:

Comfortable jeans/cargo pants that are not too baggy. I highly recommend getting at least a long sleeved shirt to wear when out on the track. Some organizations even require at least a long sleeved shirt. For a stock car, thats about all you need. You can pick up a $19 Simpson neck support to give your neck at least a tiny bit of support since you won't be wearing a full blown Hans. A hat/glasses and some sunscreen can help and PLENTY of water. Track days are normally super hot.
Light jeans, make sure you have enough ball space. I have some jeans from American Eagle that are too thick of material and I'd have swamp *** in no time, and some random *** Calvin Klein jeans that are extreeeemely light and can feel a breeze through them, so shop around for some new jeans and find paper thin ones
Light weight long sleeve shirts made of cotton are actually ridiculously hard to come by... luckily I have a fancy schmancy Express shirt I ordered online that is pretty much my track day uniform. I went through Wal-Mart, Sports Authority, other random stores... nobody had cotton long sleeves that wasn't a sweatshirt or thick as hell.
Breathable shoes... most running shoes fit the bill but might not be ideal for pedal feel. You can get those girly Pumas or Ferrari shoes and be a baller fo'real. I don't have anything good in this department, so after a session I take my shoes off. Maybe bring some flippy floppies for in between sessions.
Get a tent thing. You can pick 'em up for anywhere between $20-50 depending on sales. It is a great investment.
Bring one of those fold out fishing-style chairs... if you can bring 1 extra (if you're going there with 1 person, bring 3 chairs) because nothing makes friends faster than having an extra chair for someone to sit down and shoot the **** with.

I wouldn't wear anything polyester if I were you. In a fire, polyester will stick to the skin. Cotton is actually more breathable than polyester. However polyester is easier to clean and will last longer. Don't get me wrong, cotton is still bad in a fire because it will still burn, but it won't stick to skin.
If you already have a firesuit, I suggest getting Carbon-X, Nomex, or Carmyth underwear that has the cooling properties and fire protection.

or get a coolsuit.
Besides all the safety/fire stuff, bring a hat, sunscreen, lots of water (at least 1 gallon). Bring a towel so you can cover your seat/steering wheel when the sun is shining directly on it when your car is sitting in the paddock. Turn on car/AC full blast/windows up before setting off to the grid. Maybe let it sit for a minute before strapping and taking off. Obviously windows back down and turn off A/C when people start getting released onto the track.

guys, fwiw its not going to wicked hot at this event unless we get some crazy heat wave within the next couple days. its Lime Rock in April. highs are in the 50s this time of year in that part of the state. not to say that the suggestions are not good ones for when the weather gets warmer.

i think ill be too hot in a hoody. im thinkin about one of the looser fitting under armour long sleeves.
my car is close to fully setup (just need camber plates) for the season. so once i take care of that im gonna pick up a new helmet and purpose built clothing. i was thinking about just wearing a sparco/alpinestars nomex "under" shirt for a shirt for the summer.
as for shoes - im gonna wear my normal ol DC's next weekend since im so used to driving in them (i have giant feet). i have a pair of kart carts (pumas) but they are way too narrow for the pedal space its awckward. ill get better shoes shortly.

+1 for "Stay away from synthetics" if by chance you're involved in any kind of fire incident you may as well be wearing a gasoline suit. long sleeves long pants for sure cotton is your friend.
gloves a big plus for some people, my hands tend to sweat and that makes the wheel slippery unless you white knuckle it and you don't want to do that. most clubs and tracks that hold open track days or HPDE days will have a dress code make a call or send an email.
check the weather in "Location: Big city, Bright lights" and dress accordingly.

From: somewhere testing various tires, brakes, and suspensions.

Agree - no burnables.
First time out -- Jeans, good shoes (I wear Puma when not racing), long sleeve cotton shirt (Walmart - yeah, I just recommended Walmart...).
