how long does your 5 speed tranny last on track

my tranny took a dump this weekend. 3rd and 4th gear makes howling sound and 4th gear pops out during deceleration. the shifter also move forward and backward during accel and decl while in 3rd or 4th gear. the tranny was newly rebuilt at beginning of last year. did about 25 track days last year and about 10 track days this year. 350whp and on stock clutch. only drive to and from track. wondering how long does everyone else's tranny last. i know 6 speed tranny don't last very long on track.

Maybe you should learn how to shift and you won't have this issue...

My Shep trans just broke as well. It made it one full season, but my last event I beat the F out of the car... 20 sessions with 2 drivers on Thunderbolt over two days in 90 degree heat, I'm not exactly shocked that something went. In my case it is 5th gear and grinds badly. My shop has already dropped the trans to repair it.

did you have the stage 3?
if it's just grinding, then i can live it with it, but mine is more serious than that.

It should be a lot stronger than that...

Mine went 5+ years, around 24,000 miles and 60+ track days before I noticed the first hint of a grind on my 100% stock transmission. I upgraded the clutch prior to 2010; just for precautionary reasons as I was upping the HP. Between 300-375whp all it's life. I don't drag race it or do any No-lift crap with it.

I had Boostin Performance do all the synchro's and check things out and it's been buttery smooth since - to the tune of another 10 track days.

A few things I suggest are:
  • Replacing all the shifter bushings
  • Replacing the shifter base bushings (stock ones are rubber and will pull through)
  • Switch to a thicker weight oil - I've used Redline and AMSOIL
  • Replace that oil 1-2 times a year - more if running extended race sessions

No lift to shift. Just keep your foot on the gas the whole time and when you push the clutch in to shift it cuts the injectors momentarily.

Some people have done one pass and broke, some people have done years after years of all types of racing and never hurt their tranny. It's all in how you drive/shift how how you maintain it and do you have the right clutch

i already did all that.
- AMS shifter bushings and shifter base bushings
- ran AMSOIL since day one when installed tranny last year
- change tranny oil after every 8 track days or so

- on new Exedy oem replacement clutch since tranny was installed last year.
- dont power shift on track.
- launch the car twice on street tires at local drag strip last year, it's a 1/8 mile strip, so don't even get out of 3rd.
- been driving manuals since my first car 20 years ago, involved in racing for 10 years. i think i know how to shift. none of my instructors said anything about bad shifting habits when i first started tracking.
- always heel/toe on track, even on street most of the time.

one thing to add is that most of the track i go to uses 4th gear 90% of the time, sometimes 3rd and 5th. and it just happens that 4th gear is the gear that went bad, 3rd and 4th started at the same time but 4th is much worse. was able to drive the car home without using 4th. the car drives fine in all other gears.

Oh I see. I know exactly what that is. I didn't know people do that on road course though...always thought only drag racers use it.
