EVO Challenge Time Trial Series
DSM / EVO Challenge Time Trial Series
Updated EVO Challenge Classing System:
------------------------------------
EVO Challenge classification (this is the formal classing for the EVO Challenge event #1, April 30 at Streets of Willow. However, because unexpected issues are raised it can still be modified to make the series fair and fun for all.)
No changes are allowed to a car unless they are listed below (if it's not listed, you can't change it). If a component or other modification is listed below, any type (or size) of that component is allowed, unless otherwise noted (ie. "sway bar" means adjustable or non-adjustable allowed. “Tires” would mean any size or type of tire).
Any equipment that improves safety is allowed provided it is pre-approved by Speed Ventures. If a safety modification improves performance it may be ascribed points. Aftermarket rollbars and racing seats are allowed in any class, but an approved seat must be installed in the passenger side. No parts, insulation or anything may be removed from a car to lighten it or for any other reason, except for the tire change kit (jack, etc.) and spare tire – unless it is allowed in the points system below.
If you have a question about the EVO Challenge series that you do not wish to post here, please contact Aaron Bitterman (aaron@speedventures.net).
STOCK 300

max crank hp = 300 (EVO)
max crank hp = 330 (DSM)
Minimum weight with driver (empty gas tank ok) = listed showroom weight +100lbs.

camber plates
Bushings
DOT-R (preliminarily all DOT-R tires allowed except Hoosiers due to their high life cycle cost; MAX WIDTH 255)
max crank hp =330 (EVO)

Look at those guys for how the rules are defined. Classes I would imagine are different as there really wouldn't be so many different cars running.. anybody have a link to the S2000 TT series?
I wish this was on the east coast, too.

Well... it just so happens John and I have Sebring International Raceway rented out on April 24 & 25. I don't think I'll be able to get my EVO cross country, and I don't want people having fun without me so I didn't say anything
.Just kidding. Seriously, there's no reason why we can't have a big EVO event at Sebring that weekend. We will be bringing our AMB timing system and I can have T-shirts made up just like we did last weekend. Trophies possibly too if people are interested in the competitive part. This should be started on a different thread I think, so I'll start a new thread in the Florida/SE regional forum titled "EVO Event in Florida!!!" I know it's not quite like California in terms of the number of cars but even having a few would be great.

The EVO Challenge classing is very much like the S2000 Challenge TT classing. The problem, obviously is the crazy power adding things people can do with turbo. But the link to the S2000 classing is: http://www.speedventures.net/S2KC_Classing-2003_v2.asp
let me know what you think.
thanks,

I just added this to my initial post:
At these events there are a total of 8 time trial days (1 thill, 1 streets, 2 streets, 2 willow, 2 thill). Each day counts as a separate event. We will also name a year-end Championship Winner by dropping the worst 2 days from people's results. That way people can miss 2 of the 8 days and still compete.

This will be awesome! It'd do a great job making us EVO owners faster on the track... just like what it did to S2000 owners who are now running down and passing Vettes and Vipers!
Thanks Aaron for starting this up!
Can most of the series be possibly any farther away from the NW?
I thought SV had intensions to do Pacific Raceways in Seattle and Portland International Raceway at some point in time?

I'm certainly going to keep looking into PIR since it's possible we could drag some CA drivers up there.
Good seeing you Derek. Hope you can make it down again this year.
Thanks Aaron, you guys put on a great event. I'll try to make your Sears Point weekend before OTC. Might have to fly down and get a rental or drive down and leave the EVO somewhere so I don't have to make the drive back and forth twice in a week.
Aaron,
It would be nice to make the stock class car, a car that could still be used as a daily driver. Per the points above, if you wanted to be competitive, this wouldn't happen. So if you agree to that, these are a few of the changes that need to be made:
1) Reduce rear bar to 10 points
2) Remove 'Any body/aerodynamic modifications' from baseline and change to 'stock body/aerodynamic characteristics'
3) Increase srping points to 25
4) Change safety bonus to 2pt cage.
I have some other thoughts as well, but thats a starter.
If I could run my car and be competive in stock. I'll be there!

Derek, I'm sure you'll find lots of people to take care of your car for you here in CA. Glad you'll be able to make Infineon. You should look into the November Thill also, since it's vaguely close to Seattle
.
StevO8, my computer kept crashing and then I crashed. So i'll post it NOW.
Sean, what you're describing is exactly what I'm trying to do with the stock class (daily driver, etc.). So I agree, but I'm not sure your changs NEED to be made. The first thing is to identify mods which actually will improve lap times. I included the body mods in the BASELINE section because they are going to be insignificant for laptimes in a stock evo 99% of the time. Generally, someone who makes body mods without doing other stuff is doing it for looks and won't gain any significant time from having those mods. If people think body mods will help in the stock class than I can remove it, I just doubt it will. In modified and unlimited, functional front wings, splitters, diffusers, etc. may start to mean something, but in stock I doubt anyone will install anything significant. I didnt' want people who put a body kit, or a carbon fiber hood, on to not run because they're over points when the body kit wouldn't do anything anyway. But I personally don't really care that much either way, but I think you're talking about a mod that won't affect a car's competitiveness.
Why do you want the sway reduced to 10? What's your secret motive here?
. Usually when people want 5 points shaved its because they have stuff on their car they're trying to fit in to the points system! Or they have a killer setup in mind and they need 5 more points to make it fit into the classing. Go ahead, lay out your set up, you'll have to anyway once April 30 rolls around
.
As far as making springs 25 and having shocks be 20 I guess I'm not sure of your reasons. Most people would agree that you can do more with shocks than springs. You can run $4000 triple adjustable JRZ's or Penske's and control the springs fairly well, but you can't up spring rates and keep them under control with stock shocks/stock valving. Plus good shocks cost more, which gives them more points. The cost of mods is sort of figured in since this is all about budget racing. I guess we could make shocks and springs equal points, but I don't see why you think springs should be worth more? Unless that goes back to the driveability? Let me know what you're thinking on this one. If it's the lowered ride height, I guess I'd say that we should poll some roadracers/autocrossers about whether they'd rather have unlimited shock selection on stock springs or change springs and run stock shocks. I'm betting they'll say the former based on previous polls, but I certainly don't know from experience.
2pt. cage sounds fine with me, I'd just never heard of one.
But, to reiterate, I agree, the point of the stock class is to let people maintain driveability and spend as little as possible. Truthfully, I also would like MODIFEID to be that way. I'm planning on running in MOD and I am planning to have my car very driveable on the street. Only in unlimited will it start to make sense to turn the car into a full track car... hopefully.

Aaron,
I like the concept! I think fuel controller/ECU Flash should be deemed a lot more points because there's a lot to be gained from that up top
I also vote no points on the cage so as not to discourage drivers from adding safety equipment.
I think the points class system is a good idea because a person who is found to have additional items could just be bumped to the next class vs. DQ'd in the current class. Should make for more fun and less arguing.

Mark,
I made a mistake on the classing. I meant to put a "-" in front of the 20 pts. for the cage. The safety incentive is supposed to be an incentive. Now I see why I've been so confused... I've confused everyone.
Change made.
Ok, on the mods changes, I'll make some changes later once I get more responses.
Thanks,
Aaron
