JDM "style" bumpers for track use

Ok so, in my many efforts one of them was to try the Voltex "style" Cyber front bumper (the one with the undertray) to keep things cheap when I did bump into something in Super Touring conditions. This is the one you see from FDCarbon/GBCarbon etc which is ~ $400 and made from cheap thin layer fiberglass. I was never totally satisfied with the piece so I zip tied and reinforced the hell out of it from the word go. This weekend we did a test at Road Atlanta with PCA which went pretty successful. As most of you know the back straight at RA hits 130+. On saturday it started with the sides which are held by 3 skinny rivits from factory. Those peeled back and separated right through the glass, so we put new fat rivits backed by washers in and went out again. This time the other side failed. Redid that side and went out again. As I was getting faster and faster over the weekend (almost 2 years since i've been out) the whole front "lip" separated and split in half leaving just the top bumper portion which was even more flimsy now without the bottom piece. Thanks to the help of "Git R done" racing consisting of mouseIX, ReaperX, myself and the old man we "made" some supports out of heavy a** trailer steel I had laying in the trailer box. 20lbs of steel, a roll of duct tape literally acting as a spacer, more duct tape and a ton of zip ties later it finally survived a session. But lacked any sort of Aero to say the least.

Short version - don't bother with the cheap "style" fiberglass stuff unless you want to reinforce every inch with metal. In labor and weight you coulda bought the retail piece. It can't take the speeds we're capable of. The "stand on it" test has been put back on the list of valid testing methods.

We are preparing for the Thompson race and found a aluminum strap holding the alumilight splitter had started cracking. Lots of force working on it! I bought a set of cheap AIT rear quarter extensions. Should be interesting to see what we can do with them...

It sure took some redneck engineering to get the bumper to not flex after pulling the splitter/under tray out. We live, we learn, we get better!
