Angry Blown motor

oh well guys looks like my motor is gone.. ...i heard this tapping noise and the car bogged over 3000rpm....so we loaded it in the trailer and towed it home....i brought it to the dealer and they thought it was the crank bearings...they replaced them today...and it wasn't it....so there doing a short block....warranty...so i'm happy with that....anyways....i'm wondering what easy mods i should have them do while the motor is out?.....cam gears...cam...any suggestions.....i'm begining to wonder if this car is gonna make it thru the OTC...first week it was the clutch and now this......thanks...wayne

so are they rebuilding the engine or replacing a block or what? Would be nice if they did a rebuild with a slight overbore... as long as it can take the boost still. Of course, cams and any internals you'd like done would be best at this time.

A short block is only the block with internals, a long block inlcudes the head.

what i am saying is that they'll have the head off the car....i could send it out and purchase a cam and cam gears and have somebody install it and then have the dealer put it back on the car when the put it all back together...is the cam and gears an easy install?..how long would it take?...cam and gears arn't big bucks are they?

If the short block is replaced at a dealer the tech will transfer all the parts onto the new short block including the cams, all should be done under warranty. Mitsubishi will have all the labor operations for this and the dealer will use this to charge Mitsubishi the warranty claim.

The dealer on the other hand may just replace the long block to save labor cost which might be cheaper than doing the short block, all manufacture are always looking to warranty there claims the cheapest way.

The dealer will not install aftermarket cams and gears. I would let the dealer perform the claim THEN take your car to a tuner and have the cams and gears installed.

Wayne,

Cams are in the head.

When they replace your block/shortblock. They will have to separate the head from the block, redo the timing belt, and align the cams/cam gears to the timing belt. (To be absolutely clear, Timing belt connects the cam gears/cams to the crank in the block).

So it does save a bit of work to have the cams and cam gears done at the same time. But it would be a bit of extra work over just a block swap as they'll now need to take off the valve cover and the old cams out.

An experienced shop like RRE can do cam swaps in about 2 hours I think. They have a page on their site that describes how they do it quickly w/o having to redo the timing belt.

well they'll have the head off of the car....whats the big deal if i take the head say over to RRE and have they put a cam and gears in....that should be a quickie install with the head off of the car....i mean the dealer shouldn't have to do really any additional work....i don't think.....a guy at Buttonwillow told me that doing the cam really gave him a lot more top end
