Well, he was recording the whole thing, so he was talking to the microphone on the dashboard... why do you think we can hear him? (duh ). But watching that is a little scary, at first I thought he countersteered and hit the brake which will cause you to roll, but as said above it was his tire hitting the dirt. I suppose my car wouldn't do that if I just let it slide, as it's lower than a Legacy, but I hope I never find out. And that roof caving in like that... maybe I won't be using that 4 point harness without a roll bar.

edit: I realized it was a Legacy, not a Forrester.

no the roof was fine, I don't think a slow roll like that would do much harm to any hard top. the damage comes in your pocketbook and your ego. three cheers for the guy getting back on his horse.

Wow, it looked like the roof closed in on him a little. Maybe that's just from the gravity so his body moved towards the top. Good to know, now I feel a little safer

Wow...you're right! The first time I saw that video (about a year ago) I figured it was an instructor doing the talking. Looks like he was narrating instead of paying attention to what he was doing.

Here's a scary quote from the link Mister2zx3 posted:

My exciting track incident occurred on August 26, 2000. I was attending a HPDE run by NASA Tri-State. The event was my third track event, and my second at Lime Rock.
Now I'm in shock. This guy was only doing his THIRD track event and he's not only driving solo, but focusing on making a video to impress his friends! What a moron. That's a very tricky corner and he took it really badly. He's lucky he didn't kill himself.

making a video... um probably to later go back and better critique himself and learn... I wouldn't make such assumptions that this individual is so arrogant..

And his commentary is probably to help him know what he was doing when he can't see it.. And you can tell his skill by the lateness of his "instructions", the comments are more what has occurred, not what an instructor would say, preparing someone for what to do..

Exactly. He should be thinking of and planning for what's coming up next...not describing what he just did. Notice how he doesn't react when the car starts to slide? That's because he's one step behind the action.

I see what you're saying. But he certainly seems a little too sure of himself for a newbie. And all that chatter would be distracting to even an experienced driver...let alone someone with such a rudimentary skillset. I'd say he was arrogant.

I prefer chatter, it keeps me from over focusing or paying to much attention to any one thing and keeping all things in focus. And everyone I run with we are often talking about most anything while running. Or shooting the breeze with the whos in the pits or who ever else has a radio on track. I'd be more concerned with someone who can't carry on a conversation while driving.. You should be relaxed and comfortable while racing.. Notice how many racers nowadays chat with commentators during races, I wonder what they did to break the monotony before radios.. Most instructors try to maintain a good two way dialogue with drivers so that 1) you know they are listening, and 2) that they aren't so focused on driving they tense up and overfocus. Plus down the road it helps by maintaining a rhythm even while "things come up"..

But I guess I am just a little more relaxed wouldn't degrade someone who is taping and narrataing to later improve their driving. Plus he can later show it to someone who can offer advice.. such as if pointing out " Are you reacting this late, or are you just saying it late..."

We have all done it.

Several years back I did something similar. It wasn't as wet on the grass and I didn't roll.

911s can be impossible to catch when the go around on you after being upset by a bump on a cold track with cold tires.

I actually wasn't pushing hard and have been though that piece of track many, many times. You can tell how casual I was driving by my lazy hand positioning.

Anyway…

enough excuses...

be patient -- this is coming from my DSL line.

Re: We have all done it.

Jeez. That's a rough looking surface for a track.

I did something similar at VIR at the 3-4 interface. I was going faster and faster through that set of turns, and as I did, eventually I hit the limit. The left side tires came off. I got it back on the track, and made the error - lifted to reduce speed. Ooops. Oversteer into the infield. Whee. Fun.

Motored right back on - no harm, no foul, but lesson learned.
