2018 SM (Street Mod) Autocross Discussion

Its that time of year again, lets hit the reset button and see what silly season plans of grandeur you have.

I've been so much more focused on designing and making new parts that upgrades have really slowed. For 2018, can I not just break something critical, like a motor, again?

Upgrades for me: Finally finish front splitter, wire in tire temp gauges, wire dual map switch and finally try out full boost on the new 2.2l, Widen front of car (Aero purposes) and get the Ohlin Flags to fit with 295s

What I'm looking forward too: Seeing how the gearing change workout in Crows and hopefully Lincoln since I missed my trip last year.

What are you making your splitter out of? My current one is made from alumalite but it's taken a beating. I was looking to make another out of alumalite but I haven't been able to find a good deal on a sheet so I'm going to give this a try: https://www.menards.com/main/buildin...4424093411.htm

What's keeping you from fitting 295s right now?

I forget the material (though I know who to ask), but there was something other than alumalite that was the new hotness. My first build will just be plywood (the sheet is sitting under the car right now) to get the template of everything. Then I can just replace with a better sheet when Im happy with it.

Splitter, some R2's, and seat time. Living 140 miles plus from events has put a serious damper on event attendance.

i really need to try some bigger events this year. losing Wilmington sucks and being a idiot who drives a sm car to and from with less then a perfect record of completing events has been kind of limiting for me. I am considering buying a rollback fuso since i do not have a truck and trailer why not just buy them all in one.

Are you buying a splitter or making your own?

2018 will be an off year for me. Might hit an east coast national event, but no Lincoln this year.

Going to build my own, my skill at arts and crafts are slowly improving. This is the general design template - How to: Make your own undertray (cheap & easy) - which will extend past the front lip.

Aw man, given I actually have a working car and make it to Lincoln, that'd be another year of missing each other.

The most robust material commonly used now is called Tegris. Its machinable and very strong. I am partial to the birch myself. The rideheights I try to run they end up on the ground a lot.....

What are you planning to make yours out of?

A quick google looks like it's a proprietary material from a certain company? How easy/hard is it to get and what's the price like?

My plan right now is to cut my splitter out of a 4x8 sheet of hdpe with a cnc router since it's cheap, easily available, and not super heavy.

Yeah it is a proprietary material, seems like lots of composite places are now carrying it. Probably just have to call the company and see if there is a distributor in your area.
