Question New OZ Autoxer

Hey guys! well just recently started autocrossing. I have a stock oz lancer that I am running. I see a sticky for the evo autoxing but what about the other lancers. Who here is running non evos? What setups are you using? What mods do you have?
I just ordered new tires (yoko es100) and that is it so far on my end.

Also is there any harness made for our stock seats?

This is also my first year autox hopefully many more years to come because it is a lot of fun. My first event i was FSP b/c of my test pipe but from here on out i will be in STS. I'll be running on falken azenis, cai, rrm header, rrm exhaust, progress rear sway bar w/ autox perches, slotted discs, ss brakelines, and axis brake pads. Over the season i plan to do more suspension work as i hopefully become a better driver.

Hey Feisty, I'm surprised you haven't found any of my posts yet. I have been autocrossing my Lancer for almost 2 years now, and have been posting plenty of info, pics, and some decent regional times. I was even mentioned on the scca forums as a driver who has prepped an "underdog" car well enough to get trophies in regional events. Anyway, here's some really good information:

HARNESSES: You will be very glad you bought one of these to stop sliding around in your seat. Here's a link to $200 STREET LEGAL harnesses that are ON SALE FOR $40-50 because they're older models in colors that didn't sell. Since you're a girl, you might like the idea of a pink or purple harness. My opinion, purple looks good in the Lancer, and they also have mint, rainbow, and black depending on style.

MY SETUP: I am running STS class (the lancer seems most competitive in H stock, but what fun is that, and FSP is a little too extreme for a daily driver imo) and here's what I got:

shocks: Tein SS coiolver. Ride height set so control arms are perfectly level.
camber: -1.6 front, -.7 rear. Looking for more if I can get camber plates to fit.
wheels: Rota 15x6.5 with BF Goodrich G-Force KD 225/50/15 around 40 psi rear, 42 front.
*your stock rims should be fine, just look into Kumho MX in 205/50/15 when you get more serious.
Sway bars: Progress rear sway bar with RRM perches, stock front bar.
Strut bars: RRM front K bar and rear single bar.
Tie bar: Freedon design, but soon changing to RRM tie bar!
Seats: Corbeau CR1 (fits like a glove for 34" waist)
Harness: previously Schroth Rallye 3, currently Corbeau retractable (for sponsorship reasons. I suggest you get any 2" bolt-in Schroth model.
Intake: RMR short ram with custom ducting.
Exhaust: Magnaflow catback (not a top priority, just sounds cool)
ECU: RRM reflash. I recommend the piggyback.
Shifter: B&M short shifter, absolutely useless in autocross, but helpful in track events and daily driving.
TOP SECRET SUPER MOD: Attended some performance driving schools

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM or AIM me. I'm always willing to help out and have a fairly decent amount of experience in autocrossing (5 years) suspension and other stuff. Best of luck!

nice seeing the ladies autocrossing!! i hope u have funa t the autocrosses cause I sure do! This is my second year autocrossing. I got started when sdhtwn told me about an event in Wisconsin..and I ran TOTALLY stock in 3 events last year, yes, the stock Goodyears lol, but I still had fun and even tho i got last place during all the events, I was hooked. I was hooked because I knew how bad these tires were..and this year, I got another set of the stock OZ's and put the Azenis on there and what happens? 3rd place among the students during the SCCA Learning Curve instructional class, and 18th out of 51 in street tire class in the last autocross! I can't wait to gain more experience Now, i'll do what Brian did with his little list..

MY SETUP:

stock EVERYTHING. You heard me, stock EVERYTHING but the tires. The tires I'm using are the Falken Azenis in 205/50/15 size. I used to have a RRM Rally Spec strut bar but I took it off becuase it bumped me up into STS isntead of S-HS. You'll learn these classes soon enough. Basically, it bumped me up into a more competitive class and it would have been hard to compete in it.

I ran the last autocross with 38psi HOT all around. I havent been able to play around with the tire pressures too much yet, but 38 all around had a good feel.

And like Brian, I attended a two day instructional driving school with the SCCA. This turned out to be such a great event for me!! I learned to take my car to its limits during those two days. My instructor was a great guy and he taught me A LOT. I really recommend a class like this where you take your own car and run because then you get to know your car better. Oh and another positive thing about this event is the people. I met so many people that day and I get to see them during autocrosses so I made autocross buddies Seriously, the people that autocross are the nicest group I've ever seen!

So that's my little history on autocrossing. If you have any questions or anything, feel free to PM me or AIM me. See ya around and good luck with your autocross career!

-Bob

Just a general observation which seems to be true for any car in any class: The best three modifications you can make for autocrossing are: tires, alignment, and driver. Put the best rubber you can on the car, set up the alignment to get the most out of that rubber, and then practice, practice, practice (and get competent instruction whenever you can).

that's a good observation, and i agree with your modifications, although i havent played with alignment yet. but i know for sure that tires are the number one modification you can do!

I would agree, except that driver is number 1, then tires 2nd, then alignment and suspension.

Found it!!!

I found it... a chart that helps you class your car and decide what mods you can and can not do to stay in that class or move to another one. Very helpful, but consult the rulebook before making any final decisions as the rules change more than this site might.

Also, here's a link for handicap indexes so you can compare yourself (theoretically) with any car that ran on the same course as you did

I just got into autoX this year two and i'm hooked, first time out i placed 6th in novice so i'm no longer novice :-) This was on the worst tires ever, even worse than the stock ones so i was happy. I did Mazda rev it up the last couple of years and that has given me a ton of information. I cant wait for the nest autox next week :-)

Brian I have seen some of your pics and knew you were doing this stuff but i was wondering why it wasn't sticky somewhere!!! this is great info!! .
yes more girls should be doing this...but then i am not a normal chick otherwise i wouldn't be doing this stuff, lol...

yea i just ordered some new yoko es100's and am waiting like dog at the back porch lol...they were supposed to be at my house yesterday...my poor tires are lost!!

which harness is better on that site the autocontrol or the rallye cross?? there is only a $10 difference?

i gonna stay stock for a while so not to worried just yet...but this stuff is so fun i can't wait till the next one in June!!!

only sucks that in my area i get to play with the evos..there is such a difference in the cars in the event...i got to take a couple runs in an evo with easyevo when i went...i haven't been timed or anything yet since the day i went was a test and tune : (

What organization do you race with? SCCA makes a distict class difference between the Lancer and the Evo.

As for harnesses, I recommend you get one of those very quickly. I raced for about a year without one in the stock seats and pulled my steering column loose Besides, these ones are on sale for such a deal. After they're gone, they will sell for $150-200. It's really your choice.

The autocontrol is nice because it retracts like a factory seatbelt, letting you reach the radio, look behind you, etc. But for racing, it won't lock out to hold you perfectly in place unless you buy this switch from soloracer.com. If you don't want to play with electronics, the Rallye 3 and Rallye 4 are nice that they unclip for people to use the rear seats easily. The Rallye Cross would have to be unbolted to let someone sit in the seat behind it.

If you're running SCCA events, stock is a good class for the Lancer. Best mods to think about would be a set of R compound tires on a second set of stock rims, and that harness. But for now, just have fun!

I would suggest a higher front tire pressure and lower the rear to help the car rotate better. Your car is going to have some serious push with stock everything.

Interestingly enough, I experienced the exact opposite. The car rotated quite easily thanks to the lack of rear camber. It was only after I lowered the car that I got a trmendous amount of push.

edit: I did, however run the front tires 2 psi higher than the rears though, which seemed to be balanced pretty well.
