255 NT01 vs 245 slick.

Opinions on a 255 NT01 vs 245 BFG R1, Toyo RR, Hankook Z214.

Aaaand go.

What's the basis for this comparo?

The slicks will blow an NT01 out of the water.

Wondering if the narrower race tire is better than the wider DOT.
I can get the hankook, on clearance, for about $880.

Compound always trumps size as long as the size diff is less than 50-60mm

Meathooker Feb 26, 2019 10:20 AM

hankook z214 isnt a slick - its an r comp. also what compount? c51, c71, or c91?

the difference from a tw200 street tire to an r comp is about the difference from an r comp to a proper slick

but to answer your question a hankook will be much fast than an nt01. but it will heat cycle out in autox before it wears out of your could cord it in a long track day.

Ayoustin Feb 26, 2019 11:17 AM

I need to get my eyes checked. For some reason I thought he had Pirelli slicks on that list. But yes an r comp will still be faster.

Last I checked the z214 isn't being produced anymore. It was the tire I wanted to run for TA this year.

It only starts to get interesting to me when you do realistic comparisons. For instance a 315 A7 vs a 245 Michelin S8L slick. Like he said if it's only a 10 mm difference you'll be wasting your time on 200tw tires if lap times is your goal. Esp since most of the 245 R compound DOT tires are already 255 in reality. Then you'd dive into purpose: 1-2 lap flyer vs 45 minute race vs AX vs OneLap. All have their own strategy to consider.

But your talking about the GL rules or?

Says "medium". My HPDE = 80mins, so maybe a couple events before they cord?
I don't think I'd autox with them, though.

medium is c71. theyre good but you'll be slower than an a7. the c91 are AMAZING but they're good for a weekend.

we dug a set of pirelli SLICKS out of the trash last summer .... they are out of this world. need to get up to heat but you can PUSH them for 20 minutes and they dont get greasy. a7's get greasy after a few laps

but they cost $2400 a set and are good for 6 heat cycles ...

Isn't the A7 an autox tire? I couldn't imagine those being good for more than a solid lap. Maaaybe 2. Good for Time Attack, I.suppose.
I wasn't really trying to compare other tires ,though. I have NT01s and wondering if the Hankook would be much better.

Ayoustin Feb 26, 2019 04:13 PM

Yes. You would want R7 for HPDE or long races. A7 for AX or time attack.

I have an old set of C91 Z214s I'm using for practice tires this year and I'm excited to see how they feel.

I can score some used Toyo RRs for $500, used only for drag racing. I can't imagine they ever had much heat at all. Tempting...

Why are you even wasting time on a 245? Is it rules related? Its been well proven with the latest tires wider = faster for a given compound.

It's just have fun since they are so cheap. Hankook is on clearance, Toyo is used.
My buddy is running Rcomps on his Atom in an attempt to beat me, I'd like to show up on some too, for LOLs.
