Eagles Canyon Debrief
Eagles Canyon Debrief
Wow what a cold & windy day at the track! It sure beat working in the yard though!
Things I learned:
- Evos are FAST. Seriously, no matter the mods, we really weren't passing each other. It was kind of nice to not have to worry about trains and that sort of thing.
- If your rotors need turned, do it *before* a track day. It's not confidence inspiring by any means!
- and it makes heel toe'ing difficult
- ECR is a FAST track, but you can't take the corners all that fast since it's also a slickish track and there is very little runoff!
- Always check your trunk for stuff left in it (*cough* Kevin)
- Meth means breaking crap. I think I'll avoid it (except Andrew, who's car basically performed flawlessly).
- E46 M3's have soft rear suspension components (aka go off straight, not sideways)
- The ECR staff is quite nice and wants us to come out more often
- The rev limiter needs moved on the X if you want to put down good lap times at ECR. I was on it in 3rd on three short straights, and on it in 4th on the long straight.
- Star Specs (even 7000 hard mile ones) work really well once heated up, but when they are done, they are done (about 18-20 minutes into a session). Don't try and force the issue or you'll pull a Denver.
- Fuel starvation SUCKS. @ 1/2 a tank, I get it. Stupid gas tank design!
- My helmet weighs too much for road course duty. For autox it's fine, but after 3-4 sessions my neck was quite sore!
- ECR is bumpy in the braking zones and if you get off the line. Stay on the line and learn the bumps, because they WILL put you into FULL pucker mode when maxing out 4th and trying to make a 90* turn uphill and off camber (drift w000!)
- Amsoil brake fluid does a nice job
Multiple people told me that ECR is going to do another toy run this fall. Justin and I went up and talked to Maggie and kind of laid the hints that they should do it multiple times a year
You know, to spread the joy and what not. Maybe they'll take us up on the offer!
Thanks to 666 EVO for coming out and taking pictures an resupplying the guys with meth!
Thanks to KevinD for working on everyone's cars when they had something go wrong. Man that guy is tireless! He was up Thursday night working on his car and Friday night working on everyone else's.

I guess you guys had a blast! yeah ECR is bumpy on the braking zones. the area that you need to be careful is the straight as you exit the pits since its up hill then suddenly you have to brake. when we were there the last time my brakes were smoking(stock) good thing i bled the fluids before goin there and i guess the brake air cooler guides help alot since there are straight aways to cool the brakes down a bit. yeah you should have filled your tank before going there. no 93 gas stations for like 15 mins except for the expensive fuel that ECR sells. do you have vids?
That about sums it up....
You did forget one things... ferraris are SLOW.... kevin passed a full race spec ferrari like it was standing still.... not bad for a 30k car hahaha
Also, on the star specs.... you are right, once the get hot the get slick... you can easily tell when they are done that sessions, but I think another problem was tire pressure, I think they where crowning over pretty heavily, next time out Im going to see about getting a hold of a pyrometer to check the temps, and play with pressure a little..
Had an absolute blast!!! That is a really challenging track. MSR is lot of fun for sure, but the elevation changes, straights and technical sharp off camber corners of ECR, to me make ECR a much more challenging and fun track. I really felt "pushed" as a driver. It did take about a full session for me to get my bearing about the track... LOTS FUN, the hospitality was top of the line! In fact I found out that the track owners, husband and wife, were actually working the grill during lunch time... and the burgers where pretty good!! I guess that brings new meaning to questions, "well you dont want to be flipping burgers the rest of your life" hahaha Ill flip them every day if its at my personal race track!! hahaha
Thanks to everyone that organized this, and made it possible. And to all of you that didn't go, SHAME ON YOU!!! I think they are doing another event in april if I heard right, I expect more EVOs there!!

i had a super fun time out there too! big thanks to josh and jim. josh brought the much needed meth after i proceeded to bounce a 5 gallon container around the track for 2-3 laps before it broke the feed line to my meth pump and emptyed out in my trunk (yikes!)
jim had the right tools for the track (11mm and a brake bleeding kit, not to mention the torque wrench), after i brought nearly every socket, wrench, screw driver, and tool i thought i would need, and used none of them but jims stuff. hahaha. i'm working on my track checklist, and hope to have a dedicated tool box for it eventually.
i have 2 sessions on in car video, i'll encode them if i ever have time and post them up on the interwebz.

I didn't fill up before the last session (had 8/10ths left) and the last two laps I had fuel starvation.
And my exhaust leak is back. The nut fell off the stud on my exhaust manifold AGAIN! And the bolt worked its way off the turbo again. Kevin says he has a plan for them.... so we'll see what we can do.
I broke my camera mount right when we got there. I borrowed Justin's camera for one session so I should have a vid when he uploads it.
I also just pulled my rotors to get them turned and my ferodos are about gone. They are not safe for the track again, so I'll only be able to use them for autox from now on (changing at the site).

I put 18 gallons in at the track. Its 12 miles each way to the gas station, which is a gallon of fuel. Once you factor that waste in it makes sense to pay the 45 cents more at the track.

It was a great time, I spoke to Maggie as well, mostly about the toy run and committing a large bunch of cars. I think we can get a big group out for a really good deal, $20!! I also spoke ot her about memberships, it seems tempting.. I liked Kevin's idea of a club membership, we ought to discuss this further.

Denver...i really dont think that Ferrari was running at full speed...
and meth works fine...ive never had an issues at the 3 track days ive done with meth.
and I passed all of the other EVOs except Kevins. Jims Evo was the slowest out there. maybe it was the driver.

Only problem I ever had with meth was running so much boost it blew my hoses off at HHR.
If I ever get around (ha ha) to modding this one, I think I'll go fpRed or fpBlack before meth. Sounds like everyone (except the BMW) had a great time. Sorry I couldn't make it out for the festivities.
