Calling on NTEC for Help! (CLUTCH)

This is the deal.I burned up my clutch and need advice from you guys that knows ALOT about this sort of things. I took it to the Mitsu dealership and they are telling me it is going to a little over 2K. I need to replace the disc, cover assy, bearing, and the flywheel assy and flushing my brake lines. That is a sh#t load of cash just for a clutch and labor. Does that sound right; 2K? Or maybe go with aftermarket parts?

Talk to KevinD. He's replaced at least 2 X clutches that I know of (including mine @ 11.5k miles).

Just to add to this, I have the ACT sprung 6 puck clutch and it's pretty heavy feeling (well not any more to me). Wickedchimp has the act street disk, so it's more stock feeling.

Is it just 2k in labor? Kevin has done 3 X clutches so far. PM him for prices.... I know for the 8 and 9s he charges 550 for 5speeds and 650 for 6speeds, the dealer I think charges $1300 just to give you an idea of prices. I think he said the Xs are going to be a little more than the 6speeds on the 8s and 9s because there are several brackets that take a lot of time........

flushing brake lines is easy, i'd help you do that, as far as the clutch never done an x clutch but the ix clutches aren't impossible just time consuming.

Thanks for the advice. I was able to get ahold of KevinD and he is going to hook me up like a tow truck. It is bad when the dealer ship tries to take advantage of their customers

They're not taking advantage of you- there's a lot of overhead that goes into running a large-scale operation like a dealership. Add to that their hourly rate (it was $90/hr this time last year at Don Herring) and the fact that you will be charged the number of hours the book says it will take, regardless of how long it actually takes them, and it adds up.

i can understand how it can add up but to charge me for a stock clutch system when i can get a performance system less. That just don't make any sense especially when i have only had the car for 3 months.

It wouldn't matter either way. Mitsu isn't warranty'ing clutches with < 500 miles on them unless the owner gets lucky (?) and finds a rear main seal leak like Evog8r.

8 and 9 clutches are exactly the same work. only difference between 03-04 and 05-06 is the ACD line which doesn't really change much at all. 5 speeds are easy and fast to do. 6 speeds add about an hour-1.5 hours, because it makes it much easier to lower the subframe a little bit. not to mention the tranny is heavy as ****.

the X clutches are way different. its similar in how it all works, but bolts are different sizes, and orientations. the turbo above the transfercase makes it a B$#$% to get to all the bolts (need to take off a bunch of little shields). the tranny generally is harder to get out then back in for some weird reason. maybe because i'm very careful going back in so not to bump the retainer clip. overall the 8/9 5 speeds are about 4-5 hours of work. the 6 speeds are 5-7 and the X's are easy 6-8. X clutch i wouldn't do without help though. makes things much easier to get to with someone below and another above guiding your 10 feet of extentions

Well, Kevin, start figuring out what you're going to charge for an MR clutch swap now that we have some on the way.

The 2k mentioned above includes labor and clutch with a majority of the cost being the clutch. Aftermarket clutches are less expensive but will automatically void any warranty on your transfer case. The factory clutch is designed to slip and be the weak link sacrificing itself to save the transfer case. Keep in mind our labor rates include Garage Liability Insurance, while all of our techs have at least 11 years Mitsubishi experience and 75% of our techs are master techs, no-one is perfect and if they ever make a mistake you don't have to pay for it, it's covered. Our repair work is warranted at any Mitsu store in the country. We're open 12 hours a day 6 days a week so that your car is fixed on your schedule and you're not forced to wait until we have time to work on it. We also inventory parts for your vehicle, being the third largest parts dealer in the country means we normally have the part you need. Our shop has lifts so that our techs are able to comfortably able to work on your car and even show you what they're doing. Our labor rate is competitive with most independent shops, but hopefully we can offer peace of mind that is not available at other shops. I'm happy to answer any questions you guys have and hope maybe I answered some of the questions already voiced here.

Don I respect you, but a TWO THOUSAND DOLLAR fuse is ridiculous and would get just about any engineer in any other field fired (unless this is a multi million dollar project like a bridge or building).

I think that the clutch Mitsubishi specified from Exidy is clearly not strong enough to handle even stock power levels, let alone even slight modifications.
