local Pittsburgh Meet
Do you know something that I don't.
For what its worth I've seen inappropriate maps from most every tuner and every vendor. It seems that the "one timing and fuel map" fits all with a "little" tweaking here and their method is very popular across the board. Quite unfortunate actually.
It seems as though getting a bad tune or finding out later it was a bad tune (by someone who can show you what to look for) is like having a STD. You have it, its not good, but you don't want people to find out about it and you sure as hell don't warn others as that would insinuate that you know by experience.
Then you have *******s like me. I'm not liked by any vendor. I correct deliberate mistruths. I spout my mouth off when I feel someone isn't charging a fair price and/or doing bad work. It just really erks me when I see that someone is lying to get a sale or conveying something that isn't exactly true to make what they do seem more impressive. Hell I just found out something yesterday about a kit a vendor puts out and I know he is flat out lying about some of the "research" he has done when developing the kit. Travis knows what I'm talking about.
On the flip side with respect to tunes. The state of tune is always changing on a car, so just because you see a car that is detonating doesn't mean that a couple months ago it wasn't fine. Many evo owners don't know how to do the proper checks to make sure the fueling and air metering systems on a stock car is working correctly, let along keeping a modified car running properly. On top of that lots of owners get tuned for XYZ parts and the add KJL parts to XYZ and don't touch up the tune.
Tuning is a liability from looking at it at many angles.

Just stating first thing he should be concerned with is having the ability to look and see , understand if his motor is knocking.
I think we could agree that , that should be first order of business on his end. Tuning to address such concerns well if he dont know or know somebody who can address the issue well thats another subject in and of itself.
And those who dont believe that having a modded ride , dont require your full attention well their morons . I logged my car virtually everytime it left the garage. It is part of the territory , you just have to accept the responsibility
I know very little about tuning, but you have to look at it from a vendor's perspective. They have two options - Tune the car to it's threshold and later get a bad rep when motors blow. Or tune it for some margin of error and get a bad rep for not making enough power. Either way, they're screwed. If by some miracle they want to tune as close to the threshold as possible while leaving a small margin of error, just like Dan l said, people change parts, weather changes things, cars have problems, fuel quality changes, etc...
In my tuning experience I had an Al tune - made power, but later had all kinds of issues when 94 was taken off the shelf.
CBRD tune - Didn't make quite the power I expected, but was very safe. EvoDan and I kept logging while cranking up the boost and couldn't get it to knock at all.
Turbotrix tune - Made assloads of power, but probably was a little on the wild side.
Honest questions for you... What do you guys consider a good tune? Making power or being conservative? Or are you guys just talking specifically about seeing tunes with whacked out timing and AFR maps? What do you want to see from a car that comes right out of a tuners hands?

i think the best way to do it is with two maps. for daily driving i want a map that makes decent power, makes the butt dyno happy, but is safe enough to run day to day.
the race tune i want aggressive, but at that magic point where it's not on the edge, but not a dog either.
i will readily admit that i don't log nearly as much as i should. since the tune i am running now isn't all that aggressive (and it's been well refined) i usually just let the knock sensor sort out what it should do. not the best practice, but it seems to work out ok. if i am going to do a very driving intense type of racing like the time trials though, i will dump a couple gallons of 112 leaded in the tank. obviously since i am not tuned for it, so i don't get extra power but i like security of knowing that when i am running the car that hard i can buy myself a little extra protection by soaking the cylinders as much as possible.
as i get slowly get deeper in to the car power wise though (which is going to be waiting for a while till i get the suspension and a few others things where i want them), i am going to try to balance power and safety as much as possible. then a few years down the road when the car is paid off and taken off the daily driver duty i will probably slowly goes ***** out and end up blowing it up one way or another.

hey guys, i know this is a bit of short notice, but i just found out that tomorrow at the event the Western PA Humane Society will be collecting special recyclable items such as old cell phones and computer bits.
all the information is here:
http://wpahumane.org/recycle.html
i guess mostly they are looking for things like:
Computers Monitors Laptops Typewriters Radios Stereos CD Players
Cell Phones Fax Machines Copiers Projectors VCRs CB Radios Camcorders
Cameras DVD Players Plotters Circuit Boards Radios All Batteries Cables/Wiring
Electric pianos Game Consoles Generators Electric Lawnmowers Video Cameras
Telephones Speakers Electric Wheelchairs Printers PDAs Microwaves
Computer Software Cell Phones
