The right thing to do would be to do a compression test (albeit a pain in the ***) before buying the car. If the compression looks good all around, then you are golden. It really depends on how it was driven, so it's hard to make a blanket statement.
That being said, the ej205 motor is more stout than a lot of people give it credit for- it will honestly support just as much power as the sti ej257, without the bump in midrange torque from the additional 25% displacement.

Any mechanic should be able to do it.
I honestly think you need a civic with a warranty. i dunno why you'd spend $10-12k on a used WRX with 100k miles when you could get a brand new Fit or Yaris FINANCED BY A BANK for a similar price.
Also, how in the world can you be concerned about resale buying a subaru with 100k miles?!?!
You need to rethink your approach here...it doesn't sound like you have a lot of money or a lot of know-how to be fixing a 100k miles import. Sounds to me like you'll simply drain your savings on it and then be too broke to do maintenance or repairs.

Exactly as Turco said.
There isn't really much else that will go bad- even if your turbo ****s the bed, it's only like $200 to get a new stocker.
It will probably cost you ~1 hr labor to get the test done. The plugs aren't really located in the most convenient of places....

Hello locals. I recently sold my IX and have unused and unopened maintenance fluids for sale. DiaQueen LSD fluid, official mitsu coolant, and ATF fluid for half the retail price. PM me if you'd like to buy them!

I'm not draining my savings on purchasing the car, I have enough to purchase it, its just that I like having a buffer, and don't want to spend more than 10,000$ on a replacement vehicle. Idealistically the lancer runs fine but its prone to dying again or at least its just a trend to die.
You can call me stupid
I know I am, but hey at least if it breaks I'm learning how to fix it. I learned quite a bit from the lancer, especially when the tranny went. That was a fun puzzle piece of gears/synchros/etc to learn about. Exactly as Turco said.

Well I still have the ford as a backup car, and its not like I can get rid of that car as its only worth a couple grand. I mean yes you're completely right, but hey I'm young and stupid like everyone else says. Honestly I'm strictly looking for awd right now hence the wrx. If I could afford to get myself and afford the $$ repairs for an S4 I'd go for that too. I don't plan on modding the hell out of the car, and as far as repairs and such it'll be a good experience to learn how to fix it.

Sounds good I'll look into it. If he's local to boston I can have my buddy help me out with it at his shop. I don't mind learning.

that's very true. I was actually looking around for a good early 90's Honda hatch of some sort for a DD/beater but everything I found was riced out and/or abused. Gave up.
If that's the case Mike, good for you man!!! Congrats!
