Timz...my sister/brother in law need to get a cheap used car (looking $5k or less) and were looking at Volvo's. Any recommendations? Models to stay away from? They definitely do not want something they are going to have to do a ton of maintenance on, so reliability is key. Here is one my BIL found and liked: http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/982555269.html
I would think they would be better off with a newer S40 or 60 though, and with less mileage. What do you think?

DO NOT BUY A 1999-2001 VOLVO S80 T6 EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With that said....Maintainence is not really a key factor cost wise. Its abuse that causes high dollar repairs on these cars. Volvo service intervals are relatively on par with a lot of other manufacturers. If he is in the $5k range...look into the 2000-2004 Volvo S40/V40. Great car, and we see little issues. It's a little small, but overall a pretty bulletproof car. It's a shared platform and similar drivetrain with the European Lancer
The only common repair (which has probably been done by now) is the VVT solenoid located on the cylinder head. And once in a while, the internal seal on the exh cam hub/pulley for that VVT solenoid could leak too. But it's not too difficult to repair. T-belt intervals are every 105K miles too
The only other key part failure are the rear strut springs breaking. I stock 5 pairs lol. But they generally do this every 100K, and we don;t know why. If it was me and my dollar, that is what I would be looking at in that price range +/-. Oh, and you have a hookup @ Volvo parts too
If you need any real detailed info...email would be easier partstim@merrimackstvolvo.com
Turco- I am getting each time I post
