Damn Homie

Do/Did you have standard surge protectors on big items like your TV and computer?

I'm curious if you just had a standard one or one of those crazy expensive ones and if they survived.

So far the damage seems to include-

50" Plasma TV (dead)
Bryston Amplifier (one channel blown)
Second Bryston Amplifier (dead)
VTL Preamp (not sure because amp is fried)
Pioneer Elite HT Receiver (dead)
One input fried on DLP TV
A couple of routers are dead
Cable boxes, cable modem (verizon is just replacing them)

I figure it's about $8k worth of damage. No appliances seem to be damaged and no breakers or fuses popped. My friend in Ashland said the power went out for a split second and then came right back on. My guess is that there was a transient spike and it was too quick to catch.

I'm waiting to hear from my insurance company. All of the stuff that is dead was on a beefy line conditioner/surge protector. The TV downstairs is on a crappy powerstrip and that one survived. Go figure. The surge protector has a $500k warranty for attached items, but when you read the fine print, they basically reserve the right to just pay whatever they want and can 'negotiate' the cost of any repairs.

I am so not happy.....

That is terrible.

Great excuse to upgrade everything though, especially if it is on insurance or the surge protector's dime.

If it's on the surge protector's dime, it sounds like I may end up with a 12" black and white CRT tv and a bose wave radio....

Guess I'll just stick with my standard surge protectors for now.

Insurance FTW!

When Circuit City was around we used to set people up with all sorts of new goodies when they had power outages. Free upgrade for you!

damn mikie... Did you use an APC UPS or conditioner unit? Theyre beefy and have decent power filtering/conditioning. A transient shouldn't make it through one of those. even their $22 surge arrestor - should have protection up to 10K.

I dunno. It looks like insurance is going to cover everything for replacement cost, but I need to get repair estimates on everything first to see if it's cheaper to fix or replace the stuff.

I have a Belkin PF31 which has $500,000 worth of coverage, except they seem to be really difficult about what they cover and how they pay out. They specifically say they reserve the right to prorate and repair cost or any replacement value.

I'm going to see if they will cover my $1000 deductible with the insurance company and we can go from there....you also have to ship all of your gear to them for evaluation. I don't think I want to pack up a 120lb TV, 70lb amp, etc.....

I'll call them now and see what they say.
