Massachusetts bill to ban modified exhaust re-introduced

I don't know if you guys in the Northeast heard about this. Apparently, a bill to ban modified exhausts in Massachusetts has been re-introduced by some legislative, fun-killing weenie.

Sorry to hear about for all of you in the Northeast. I hope you guys contact your local representatives.

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

Massachusetts Bill to Ban the Sale/Installation of Aftermarket Exhaust Systems Is Back . . . Again

After being stalled for the last several years, a bill (H.B. 3574) to ban the sale or installation of “an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust” has been reintroduced by Rep. Liz Malia (Rep.LizMalia@hou.state.ma.us). The bill excludes limited-use “antique motor cars” from its scope - a clear attempt by the bill’s sponsor to divide the automobile hobby in an effort to gain clearer sailing for this restrictive and damaging piece of legislation. H.B. 3574 has been referred to the Joint Transportation Committee.

We Urge You to Contact the Members of the Joint Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 3574

* H.B. 3574 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions.

* H.B. 3574 does not supply law enforcement with a clear standard to enforce, allowing them to make subjective judgments on whether or not a modified exhaust system is in violation.

* H.B. 3574 fails to recognize that aftermarket exhaust systems offer increased performance, which can make a vehicle safer by improving its ability to merge, pass, travel uphill, etc.

* H.B. 3574 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems with more durable, better performing options.

* H.B. 3574 would only exclude “antique motor cars” defined as those vehicles over 25-years old which are used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, etc.

DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Massachusetts Joint Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to H.B. 3574.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance.

Yeah...it's been "back" again for awhile...infact, that is already a law...we can't have anything louder than stock.

I hear you on this. MA must be one of the most strict States on modified exhausts. We can't have anything that looks different from stock either, some police pull over EVOs with stock exhausts.

I'm in NH , according to the rules to get an inspection sticker (which is required) you can ONLY have the stock exhaust . Anything besides that is illegal . Of course it's not strictly enforced , but if you get busted by a cop with attitude he can ticket you AND the inspection station that gave you the sticker . Of course all Harleys that have NO exhaust drive around like it's Christmas morning . I got pulled over in my last car for loud exhaust and the cop had to stop talking to me while he waited for the Harleys to go by because I couldn't hear him , subsequently I only got a warning .

NH tried passing something similar to the affect of any aftermarket exhaust. What killed this attempt of passing a Bill was that companies like Midas or other muffler type shops would not be able to sell their product because it was not an OEM offering. Hopefully this can apply to Mass.

yeah they preach about this and say you cant have a modified exhaust. In the two years iv had my exhaust iv got one ticket for it, and all i did was go to court and said i put it back to stock and they let me go.

i am in nh and never heard of the "stock exhaust" rule..it must really not be enforced because i have owned several cars with aftermarket exhaust and have never had an issue. interesting info nonetheless

That's news to me, I actually went and looked up the law Chapter Saf-C 3200 Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Requirements, Part Saf-C 3218 Exhaust System all it is says:
(c) All replacement exhaust systems shall meet the requirements of RSA 266:59. Trucks that are not equipped with a camper or other enclosed structure for carrying passengers may be inspected without a tail pipe, as long as the muffler extends past the passenger compartment and has a down spout.
and if you go look at the Section 266:59 all that says is that you can't have a test pipe. So unless those laws are out of date, an after market exhaust is perfectly legal - just don't have a loud one.
