Painting a car is all about the labor in the prep work. If your car isnt all dinged up and really just needs minor body work and paint, save yourself a ton of cash and strip the car yourself. Pull off all the moldings, door handles, trim, headlights, tail lights, bumpers, etc. Scuff the whole car down with 400 grit then have it towed to the shop. This way, the shop just has to fill any surface imperfections, block sand it, spray it and polish it, then tow it back to your place and you do all the re-assembly. Depending on how much body work the car needs, if its only a little bit for minor dings and scratches, you can probably get the whole thing done for about $1500-$2000 which is very fair. The other option if its gonna be a beat down track car, have the whole car vinyl wrapped in a solid color. You can get that done for about $1000 if your doing just a solid color with no graphics or designs. Most places give you a 5 year no fading warranty, and if you ever need to replace a body part, they can re-wrap that part alone at a very fair price.

i have another shop that does excellent work, though i dont know if he's willing to do a "economy" job. his approach is usually quality work and no shortcuts. he's located in elizabeth. and dont expect a grand or two paint job, then you should truely go to maaco.

I guess wrapping it is an option for me. But part of me just says "do it right... The first time"

Just to clear the air, again, no one was asking for a poor paint job, just looking to see of there were any quality shops owned by friends or family that could help other evo owners out

Ultimate Collision Center in NY used to do deals for EVO guys all the time. The owner of the shop's son or brother or something was big into evo's and but his username on there is disabled, might not hurt to call them up and check if they still give a discount for evo guys. google them to find out their info.

Mark is not the trans guy... Keith is. Mark builds the engines and tunes. And the OP asked for a friend of the family who does a good paint job so I gave him one... GL with the search
