I wonder if after the lock up the ABS went into an ice mode?

Part of the problem is once you get used to properly working ABS you learn you can steer while hard on the brakes. At least it was a soft impact and he was able to drive away.

you heard correctly.

from what I was told, the failure, which was a worn down ABS wire, caused the wheels to lock up and he didn't get off the pedal enough to unlock the brakes. He said he was pumping and lifted a little, but not enough.
