Smoked headlights
Smoked headlights
I read the article in the how-to forum for blacking out the headlights. It was pretty well written but had several different estimates on time, though it only took about 3-4 hours to complete. I decided to go with a smoked look instead of all black just to try something different. All in all, it was pretty easy to do. The bumper took about 15 minutes to pull off, then just about 20 minutes with a heat gun per headlight to pull them apart. I went to a hobby shop and bought some transparent black (smoked) spray paint. It went on nicely and I just painted over the crome portion without sanding anything. I also took out the amber insert, big fan of doing that on Audi's. I'm pretty happy with the way it came out, defintely more agressive looking. Let me know what you think.

it looks way good. i am not a huge fan of the all black either. i think the gray looks way better. as with jdog, i would definately screw this up. you interested in hooking up sometime, and doing a few cars for a nominal fee, and beer?
I would be interested. Could probably do 3 pairs in one day. Let me know.

It's really seems more intimidating than it is, just requires the right tools and a little patience. If anyone want s this done I'd be willing to help out.

how does it effect the light the headlights put out? are they still drivable at pitch black conditions w/o strain? are they darker from the outside view? do they still look like HID's? just a couple of questions. pm me with a price if we rallied 3 evos, and met up with you somewhere. just a round about figure.
The light output is the same as stock, since I didn't actually do anything with the lens cover. I also didn't paint the portion immediatly near the actual bulbs since they are needed to reflect some of the light. I'll try and get a better pic during the daytime for more detail.

The rear lights are a little more tricky since they are more delicate than the fronts. I want to redo my first attempt with another set. I used a candy apple transparent red model paint. With two coats on the backside of the plastic lens, they come outa a little darker than the Evo 7 lights. With one coat they would probalby look almost identical.
