Desperate:

Hey just wanting to find out if any one has had this happen, and if so what the heck was it. And of course how did you remedy it.

Car feels like its Misfiring at 2000rpm and above. Changed out the spark plugs because I thought that might be the problem and It seemed like it worked. So I drove to Applebees tonight and coming back through the gate it started all over again. When I changed the plugs they had a crap load of carbon caked on them and looked a litte chared. And the #2 boot had a little bit of white/grey residue on it. Ive read some other post and it sounds like that my be caused by arcing. If so what would cause the plug to arc and would changing the boot out remedy this.

I need to get this solved as soon as posible so any help would definitly be appreciated. Thanks every one

faulty coil pack(not giving you full load). It is extremely easy to T shoot that problem

First thing I would do is to isolate the cilinder that is failing. First, remove the cover and look through every hole while you rev your engine at the desire rpm range.

Look for spak leaks. If you spott a spark leak, then that is your faulty cylinder.

Also I would removed all the spark plugsagain and make sure the little porcelane white isolater are all properly secure and not cracked or loose.

Do a continuity check using a Digital multimeter(the DMM cost around $15 at Aurozone), place the leads on each side of the coil pack and check that there is no opens.

Start like that.

Also, you might have a dirty fuel filter, you might want to consider that as well.

my .2c

This also happens if your MAF sensor is not plugged in all the way, the wires are fried, or the sensor itself is dirty or broken. Also, ask yourself what may have caused the change - did you install any new parts? Oil change? Washed the engine bay? It might give you (us) more clues to what happened. Do you have an intake? Check the wire bundle and plug just behind the air filter.

Ok, so its been like two weeks and still no luck. Ive figured out that the only time I seem to be having this issue is above 2500 RPMs. Ive went over every electrical and vacume line, and hose in my car. Yes I do have and Intake and I just cant see that being my issue. Ive been runing the HKS RS for about 6 months now with no issue. If all else fails its just going to the shop tomorow, Work has been getting so hectic the past few days and after spending all day out in the weather I just cant bring myself to spend the time under the hood when I get home.

I think one of your coil packs is the issue.

i don't know much about the evo engine... but on my 02 es that i used to have... i replaced the spark plugs with the "recommended bosch platinum/titanium 4's"...

The plugs fried a plug wire all the way back... cost me $20 for the plugs $170 for the dealer to fix it...

It had the same effect on my car... it ran very crappy... if i stomped on the gas it would just almost crap out... so you might wanna take it to the dealer have them check it out... From what your describing sounds exactly like what my car was doing... Also when i replaced it with new different style plugs(not ngk)... it ran good for a couple hours and then went right back to being ****ty again..

I recently had the exact same problem - carbon buildup, higher RPM mis-firing, power loss, etc..

Methodically tested & eliminated just about every possible cause - everything from simply changing the plugs, up to to draining & purging the fuel system in case I'd gotten some bad gas.

Nothing made any difference at all: everything tested fine & visually looked OK, but then began noticing that occasionally would get a slight whiff that smelled as if something was burning (ever smell a burnt coil pack?)

Another local Evo owner was kind enough to swap his coils & plug wires with me before I shelled out the $$ for new coils, wires & boots: hey - problem solved!!

Dealer replaced all the plug wires & & coil boots under warranty, no questions asked. Culprit turned out to be microscopic holes in the plug wire boots which allowed 'em to arc.

Did you read my thread:" I hear clunking from my glovebox? "your answer might be in there!! GO look before you do anything else!

My year long+ problem was finally solved!!!! Not saying this is your problem, but I have been fighting the "plug" gremlin for longer than enyone I know, and I explain on that thread why the PLUG issue clears up, and comes back. Hope it solves your problem. its food for thought anyway!

looks like it can be the coil pack or spark plug wiring that leaks current to the ground.

ALL OF THE SCENARIOS ARE IN THE "CLUNKING BEHIND THE GLOVE BOX THREAD", If you read that already, and tried what I did, you shouldn't still be having the problem!!!!! Did you at least glance at it?
