Okay guys... this is justplain rude.

I brought my friend's accident to your attention to show you guys how much I care about all of you and so that this doesn't happen to anyone, not to put him on the spot for you guys to be the judge! As of right now, it seems everyone is arguing about driving skill and who's better at what. What gives? I didn't put his pictures up here for everyone to put in their two cents... it was to get you guys to spread the word about safety mods you can do on your cars. We all love to mod our cars, and what better than mods that can keep us safe?
He has every right to be upset. Why the smartass remarks, folks? Please keep it civil!

Thanks, and keep up the posts on safety equipment!!

Not once have I ever had an accident. I've even done track days in the rain and I didn't wreck my car. You just have to know when the slow the hell down and how to correct your car once something is happening.

Florida is basically at sea level so of course there are gigantic puddles after it rains...so slow the **** down and you shouldn't flip your car multiple times from hitting a damn puddle. In fact, go take a driving course so you know how to drive better. Sorry if I'm being honest instead of just saying "oh that sucks..."

what point does this prove?? You just have been lucky. Accidents happen to the best of us.

Living in GA for 10 years I can attest to the flash flooding that does occur. That combined with the high speed limits (75 mph on I-95 through most of Florida) causes a lot of accidents like this. Most people take some time to adjust to this. It rains down in the South like you wouldn't believe, and often times people just pull off to the side of the road during heavy downpours and wait it out. The storms rarely last longer than 15 minutes.

That being said, I have seen many people hydroplane and go out of control while living in the South and Northwest. Usually there are two possible contributing factors: 1) Excessive speed, or 2) Inadequate tires. People just don't hydroplane randomly. There is a specific speed based upon vehicle weight, tread, road surface, and steering input at which a car will hydroplane. Stay below this threshhold and you will be safe. It sounds like the driver was going below the speed limit in an attempt to avoid hydroplaning, but still spun out. What tires were on the car? The stock Advans are great in the rain and should not be swapped out for anything less than a comparable tire IMO.

EvoKitty, sorry to hear about your friend. Accidents happen to the best of us. It is good that he is OK though. I think defensive driving courses along with high performance driving schools are one of the best safety "mods" you can invest in.

If you hydroplane your car, you were obviously going too fast for the conditions. Advans aren't wet-weather tires...they do well when there is moisture , but in standing water they don't evacuate as much water as true all-weather tires.

Yeah like 1/4 million miles on the road without an accident and it's just luck...

I am not trying to be rude, it's just that you have two friends who managed to flip over a car that is one of the better performing cars on the planet...and you are looking for better seatbelts and such when you should be looking for driving tips, schools, etc. With the handling, brakes, and power of the Evo, not to mention AWD, there isn't a lot of reasons for them not to keep the shiny side up during normal street driving. I'm just trying to point out, as matter-of-factly as possible, that the best safety device upgrade for the streets is the driver.

Of course accidents happen, but the vast majority can be avoided with smarter driving. If you know you are driving after a storm, and know there is such a thing as "Florida ice", and you know you have ultra-high performance summer tires on, then slow down. Slow speed = no hydroplaning = no driving on your roof, know what I mean? Maybe if people drove a bit smarter, we would have less "another one of my friends flipped their evo, what seatbelt is best?" threads...

OK then whatever the tire was, the wet-weather traction was being exceeded...and the reason it was being exceeded was the speed was too high for the tire to evacuate enough water to maintain contact with the road...and the only thing that controls the speed of a vehicle is the driver...and these kinds of accidents are 100% avoidable...
