CF Hood

So I haven't posted in a long time, but I have a question that I would like the opinion of those that would be better in the know than I.

I am looking to possibly put on a carbon fiber hood. I would like one that has the stock look, but obviously be CF. I'm not familiar with which manufacturers are better than others, so any ideas?

Thanks guys,

J

Thanks man in Indiana who's posting in the NW region of the forum for some reason. Reason why I asked here, is because I KNOW a lot of the people in this area and have met them. Its easier to post it here than to text or email or call every single one of them and ask their opinion.

Carbon Fiber hoods actually weigh more than the factory aluminum one.

Trunk lid is 1 lb lighter in carbon fiber.

Here's an idea for everyone wanting carbon fiber body parts.

Rotational mass;

Reducing Rotational Mass is a FAR more effective way to have gains vs. lightening the chassis.

1 ounce of rotational mass = 10 lbs static weight on a chassis.

Items like brakes, wheels/tires, axles, etc will give you far more benefit than any CF part you add replacing the already lightweight aluminum components.

I just bought 2 piece rotors all the way around on my car for $1400. The 2 piece brakes are claimed 13 lbs lighter than the factory 1 piece. To put that into comparison to a $1,000 CF hood: 13lbs x 16 ounces = 208 lbs. Will a CF hood save that much weight for it's price? I'd put my money on if you replaced every aluminum part on the chassis with carbon fiber, you still wouldn't shave more than 20lbs or so. To me this seems like a horrible cost vs. benefit, especially when you add paint I would bet the difference would have to be measured in ounces.

my 2c.

It depends on what you buy. Many "CF" pieces are fiberglass with CF wrapping. For the fiber images / robispec pieces I bought, I did save some weight:

hood:
stock = 18.5 lb, FI/RS = 11.0 lb

trunk
stock = 22.5 lb, FI/RS = 4.0 lb

total:
41 lb -> 15 lb (26 lb reduction).

Rotational mass savings are better for accel & braking, but for handling (corner grip) it doesn't matter if you save mass on a rotating component or a non-rotating component. Save weight wherever (yes I have 2-piece rotors and a lightened flywheel too).

I can attest to these claims as well, since I also run both pieces. If you're looking for CF, this is the brand to go with.

Hey J,

Good information thrown out there already in this thread. You want to make sure you save your pennies and get a full CF hood as opposed to a fiberglass hood with CF overlay such as Seibon/ViS, etc. Full CF hoods will weigh less than the stocker but will be very expensive. If you want a CF hood strictly for aesthetics, go with a Seibon hood. Just keep in mind the fit and quality of a cheap hood like Seibon will not be as good as a Fiber Images, C-West, etc. hood.

Void! LTNS! Glad to see you are still around.

Mine was mainly for aesthetic purposes only. I crunched my hood in an accident recently, and thought it would be cool looking to have the CF hood. I wasn't going for weight reduction, just something different. I appreciate all the input. I'm still kicking it around, but just thought I"d ask for opinions on brand. That was it. Thanks again though.

I've been undercover this year, but there are some nice things in the works for next summer . Hey, regarding getting a hold of Robi - I forgot it's SEMA this week, so that's probably why everyone is off the grid ...
