Top Gear

Why don't we have a show like this in the US? It is by far the most entertaining automotive based show I have ever seen lol.

Also, why don't we have a tuner show that isn't F&F looking? Something like the beginning to end build of a real time attack car or something.

First off... Top Gear in the US could never function because, at its core, it is not beholden to anyone. Think about that for a minute.

Top Gear in the UK is a BBC product and the BBC is a PUBLIC entity. It's like PBS here (but infinitely cooler) and as such, they get their funding REGARDLESS of what they say about advertisers or their products.

...and about that funding, that show is chiefly supported by several water cooled money cannons. We can't repel firepower of that magnitude.

Here, in the States, it is ALL ABOUT funding and TV Shows are completely and totally beholden to their Sponsors and Advertisers. You put a Chevy or Ford on the Telly and drop a bomb on the car, telling the public what a pile of rubbish the thing is and guess what? Not only will you loose your advertising and sponsorships but you will likely be sued for slander and libel.

Second, the producers here tried to "mimic" the show, rather than just build a great NEW show with its own identity. Basic premise, sure, test cars and give the results. But to rewrite the scripts of every TG UK show and just do it again... well that is just crap.

What makes the UK show WORK is the adolescent irreverence of a well matched set of boyish automotive enthusiasts that not only have years of writing and presenting experience but are well known, popular television personalities outside of the show.

For example, what would you get if you left a couple of 11 year olds alone in a house to Study? In the States, you'd get two boys playing video games, easting all the food and a Mother walking in on noise and a mess with an angry look on their face while the boys make ridiculous explanations.

In the UK, you wouldn't see much of that but later that night, when all seems well, dad would open up his favorite hardback from the shelf to find the pages stuck together with what smells a bit like the strawberry jam that is now missing from the fridge.

It's the subtlety that makes is "click". It's not "in your face" (except maybe the Souther US visit episode the boys did) that US shows push.

I love Tanner and thought he would be decent on the show... don't really know the other two guys that well but even with Tanner... without the writers and producers on the right path, it was never going to fly. Fast Cars and Tire smoke are the gravey, what the US show lacked was the meat and potatoes that make up the substance.

Oh, and that sticky bit in between.

Scott

^ i agree with this. The show would need to be divorced from any automotive industry funding. Otherwise the show would end up being a big car maker X commercial. The same way the transformers movies are long GM commercials.

Trying to copy something that is original and creative never works. American tv has also been heavily pushing the reality/competition shows, even on the discovery and history channels. These types of shows are not appealing to gears heads and/or the typical top gear fan.

The best we get is the occasional documentary. There can be full of good information, but they also lack the entertainment value of top gear.

I agree with you fully, Scott. What I want is an American version of the show that is completely original, not a copy. No one can copy the BBC version, it is far too good.

On another note, we need something that follows tuning culture without being cheesy. Something that during race season, will follow time attack, scca pro, scca rally, idrc, things like that. Talk to the teams, do episodes on shops like AMS, RRE, ER, Cobb, and their custom builds. Something that actually shows how to do things besides install an underbody light kit lol.

FWIW, complete Top Gear episodes can be seen on Streetfire a few hours after airing in the UK. No need to wait for a torrent to download.
