Post Polling: Best family mobile??

Hey guys/gals,

As some of you know, the wife and I had a son this spring. Hauling him and all of his stuff around has us thinking of trying to get a different car to replace the wife's 2007 Honda EX. Sooo question is...(if you have kids)

What is the "best" family vehicle? and do you actually own one...if not, then why do you think it's the best?

We've been looking around and would like to get a vehicle with as good of MPG as possible, as many seats as possible, tow something (if possible), safe, and plenty of legroom in the front seats (my wife is a talley)...

minivans seem to meet our needs....but we haven't talked ourselves into getting one...I guess they still have a stigma in our minds..

I would suggest a Toyota RAV4 V6. has plenty of power, optional 7 seats, and in your price range it'll be fully loaded. Try to get the Limited or the Sport versions. We have a Sport V6 in the family, handles really well and is surprisingly quick. Plenty of room in the front. 4wd for inclement weather and it has a lockable rear diff. Or if you want something bigger get a Highlander.

Do not underestimate the power of a honda odyssey, that thing is a beast! 8 seater with towing capabilities, and a decent amount of legroom. It's fairly nimble and has some pickup. It gets around 17-19 mpg average though. Some like the sienna more because its awd, but they are both about the same. if i were to get one for a daily, a tune would be a must lol. good luck with your decision!

Hummer H2!!!!
and Im serious! They are great for if you get into an wreck, I have a friend who was T-Boned by a truck at 60mph and he still drove the H2 home. He was hit and then pushed into another truck, both trucks were total losses and yet the H2 still drove home. yes i know the gas mileage is low (around 13-15mpg) but you cant really beat it for safety! this is what i just bought for my family because i just had a son. plus they are practcally giving them away right now! I bought a 2006 with 43k miles on it and was able to talk them down to $24K. my insurance is no different then what it was on my dodge ram. I would rather my child ride around in a vault on wheels and pay a little more at the pump then have him die in a mini van! leg room is crazy good in this thing, it seats 6, can tow a good amount, again i know the gas milage isnt the best but it has eveything eles you asked for! just my 2 pennies!

We like our 2009 Pilot, and we liked our 06 Pilot as well. I don't think you need anything that big yet, Miguel. I like the Highlander, Rav4, and even CR-V as well, and also wouldn't rule out some of the new Fords. They have been going lower displacement/turbo and seem to have been doing well. Also, some of the newer designs are great, IMO (I've got several friends with the new Edge and new-ish Flex and they both seem great).

If you really want the all around package, try going for a small diesel, though that limits your options as far as which vehicles. Maybe Tiguan or something in the Golf range? However, you'll get good mileage, good torque (butt dyno will tell you you're going faster than you probably are).

Don't get a minivan! IMO, minivans are only good if you have crappy garage space or are often in those types of situations with your kid; they usually don't get that great of mileage. SUVs are more versatile, and will likely fit all you need.

Honda Pilot FTW, we love ours. It's not too big or too small - it's just right.

Maybe check out the new Durango? I've driven a 2011 jeep grand cherokee a few times and they are very solid in all aspects except the gas milage is not that great.

Volvo XC 60 T6. AWD, decent HP, safe (air bag heaven) and roomy. Just above your budget (if you don't mind upping it some), but a nice car.

Volvo XC90 V8 AWD, we averaged 20mpg but would get 24mpg on the freeway. 3rd row, can tow, and plenty of power with the 4.4l V8. We got ours for around 24k used.

Amazingly safe. My wife still misses that car. We replaced it with a 2008 Mazdaspeed3.

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4 door? Test drove one with the 6spd and it was nice.

^If Jeep would ever put a Cummins in one of their rides (like they keep saying they might) I'd be all over that!
