Longtime Lurker, First Time Poster. My 13 OS SE

Been a member of the forums for awhile. Used to drive a 02 Lancer OZ Rally. Bought the O Sport in April and very happy with it so far. Not sure how many mods I'll do, just wanted to share what I've done so far. This forum has been incredibly helpful, glad to see we have a small but growing community here.

So Far
- Tint 20% Front Side Windows & Tint Bar across top of windshield
- Mitsubishi Lancer Front JDM Strut Bar
- Curt Class III Trailer Hitch
- Plasti Dipped Stock Rims Black
- Removed Mitsubishi, Outlander Sport, & 4WD from back
- Thats it for now

Aaand some pictures. Sorry for the %$#@ quality. Cars a bit dirty too. Its been raining all weekend, still pretty overcast.

Hahaha, thanks for doing the hard work for me! That's exactly what I plan on doing with my future Outlander Sport! Except it won't have fog lights You even got the tint strip down to the matrix like I planned! Can you do a side shot of your window tint in different weather conditions and facing towards and away from the sun?

Good of you to post and welcome to the forum.

Beat both Jayli and myself to the bunch on black plastidip rims.
Damn... nice work!
I WAS going to photoshop some black rims on my O.Sport just to see how it'll look before I do the work. THANKS for doing the actual work! Looks fantastic.

Ha, no problem! Here are a few more pictures. They didn't turn out the greatest, a mix of too much sun and my broken phone. I can try to take a better shot of the window tint when i have a better camera.

Thanks! It actually started pouring midway through spraying the plastidip on these, had to finish in the garage. Conditions weren't ideal, I should of waited another day to paint but I was impatient. Overall I'm pleased with out they turned out. I wasn't sure how I'd like it with the chrome lug nuts, but the look has grown on me. Plastidip has calmed my urge to spend money on black rims, for now anyways

Nice, almost all my vehicles have always been black on black on black. I never bought black rims again after my first vehicle with them, because the second they get nicked, a part of you dies. Now that I've been blacking out my wheels with plasti dip for my past 2 vehicles, I no longer worry about my precious rims getting damaged. Although, I do really miss the beautiful glossy finish that matches the black paint job.

I forgot to ask you to do the pictures with someone sitting in the vehicle, because I wanted to see how visible people are in the car with light going through the windshield. I have 20% tint on my current vehicle too, and 5% tint strip. I think I'm going to try 15% when I get the Outlander Sport.

It also appears that a Gloss Black Wheels with Chrome Lips would be perfect for the Outlander Sport since there's all those chrome trims on the front end.

Sometimes I really miss the fancy rims

4 cans of black PlastiDip X roughly $6.00 per can at Home Depot + Painters or Masking tape that you probably have laying around the house + some old news papers or a few (new) trash bags to shield from overspray = about $25

Check out http://www.dipyourcar.com/pages.php?pageid=8 for some awesome tips & tricks with PlastiDip. Take your time and follow the instructions on the site below (very light coat -> heavier -> etc.):

Wheels might need a little extra attention in the prep department. Brake dust and road grime seem to be extra stubborn when stuck on wheels for awhile, a secret is Brake Dust Pro, available at DipYourCar.com. It immediately breaks down brake dust before AND after you dip your wheels. It's safe to use on flat dip and glossifier. In fact, it's only downfall is the smell.... but that's how you know it's kicking brake dust's butt!
  • Do I have to take my wheels off to dip them?
You don't have to take your wheels off, but in some cases it's easier and you get better coverage if you do.
Check out Fonzie's video for dipping without taking wheels off
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlyB3FbYRRs

Here's a video showing basically the same concept but off of the vehicle
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwUuFUbulw8

There is also some talk of standing the wheel up vertically, and rolling it in between coats to ensure all faces of the wheel get covered. This may be very helpful with a mesh style wheel.
  • How many coats should I spray?
You should start by knowing that the thicker plastidip is, the easier it is to peel off. 2-3 coat dipjobs will be much more difficult to peel off than than a 5-6 coat dip. It seems to be a consensus that 4-5 coats is the minimum for 2 reasons, coverage in addition to peelability. This number is true for Rubber Dip Spray, but should be at least doubled for Plasti Dip that has been thinned but not tinted.

The first 2 or so coats should be a light dusting, this enables the product to be dispersed over the surface evenly and dry quickly to ensure proper “adhesion” to the paint. After the first couple of coats Medium to Wet coats should be applied until your desired coverage is achieved.

Depending on what color the surface is, and what color you are spraying it, there may be more/less coats needed. Obviously it will take more coats of a light color to spray over a dark car. With some colors (ie: blaze colors, and florescents) it may be necessary to spray a basecoat first. A basecoat of white will yield a brighter color than a basecoat of black with these colors.

Just finished the LED strips over the headlights. I went with the side firing LED strips flat along the top of the headlights, and stopped at the fender. I really like the look, the pictures don't do it justice. They should have had these from the factory I think. I bought a fuse tap and wired it to the headlights, it works really well.

That was one of the quickest, cheapest, best looking, inexpensive mods to do which is why I don't understand it didn't come as factory. They could have possibly sold a lot more vehicles because of it.

How many coats of black plasti dip? Also, did you use the glossifier? If so, how many coats of the glossifier?

Would you mind posting a couple of pictures in fairly dim lighting while looking straight on the car. That'd be great, thanks!

I ended up buying a wheel pack from dipyourcar.com. It came with 4 bottles of black, and 3 bottles of gloss. I originally did maybe 6 or 7 lighter coats of black, and about 4 or 5 light coats of clear. After a day or two, I realized I didn't have enough of it on, and redid them. I lost count on the coats, as I continued to do light coatings, and just finished off the 4 cans of black and the 3 cans of clear. If I had to do it all over again (which if I don't buy rims, I might next summer) I would just use up all cans at once, in as many light coats as it takes. You could probably get away with heavier coats, but I was paranoid about it running or not coming out the way I wanted.

I actually am out of town for a bit, so I won't have the ability to take any new pictures of the LEDs anytime soon. Sorry
