K&N Air Filter Installation

This is quite embarrassing to ask, but I bought a drop-in K&N engine air filter for my '14 outlander sport, that I made sure was compatible, but by following the instructions in my owners manual it just isn't fitting. I know I must be doing something wrong because even the stock filter isn't fitting back in the box right. Anyone have any tips/photos to make this actually work?

Got it fixed, there's nothing prayer and patient won't take care of. Let this be a lesson to everyone, don't be crazy like me and decide to put in your new K&N drop-in filter when a snow storm has just passed through and the day's high may have reached 9F, excluding wind chill. Everyone take care.

Could you take some pics and upload them here? That way the next person that has this issue will be able to resolve it.

I've thought about getting the K&N drop in filter. Do you notice a performance or mileage difference versus stock? Btw, I'll be installing it in my garage so hopefully the elements don't hinder me too much lol

I can't say for sure at this moment, because with all this weather and living in a rural area I've been driving very slow since install to say the least. I do think low speed performance is enhanced though, my O.Sport seems to recover from the "25-30 mph drop" much better. When I took out the stock filter though I must say I was impressed to see "made in usa" stamped there, however the k&n filter looks much higher quality. Sorry to go slightly off topic, I will report better results when I get my new tires and sling some of this slush and ice out of my way

Did you notice a change in tone. If you see mileage and performance gains I may pick one up for the wife's however she won't be ok with more engine noise nor will I.

To be frankly honest there does seem (in only my opinion of course) to be a slight sound increase in the optimal power range. It's not much louder, more of a drone, so it's just your personal preference. I live and grew up in the south so we go by "more sound and more smoke (for the diesel guys)"

Thanks for keeping us updated. I may look into getting one.

Were you hesitant about going with a K&N considering all the mixed reviews regarding their filters? Any concern on it voiding the warranty if something would go wrong?

Well, on the k&n website the reviews were all good concerning the particular filter, and I didn't want to go too drastic with any intake (as you mentioned, don't want to affect the warranty.) So with drop-in filters, I didn't know of any alternatives with the background that k&n has. To go in-depth about any warranty concerns, I think it'd be hard for mitsubishi to void someone's warranty since it merely replaces the stock filter, it doesn't change the air intake altogether; plus, k&n offers a million mile warranty on the product and even sends a label that you can place in the engine bay warning any techs to not remove the filter (that it is washable and reusable) and clearly states it cannot void your warranty. Since I'm typing a long reply I will let everyone know that if you follow the instructions in our owners manuals to change the filter (which I did follow) it isn't as simple as the instructions may say, or I may just be mechanically challenged.
