Tested: Outlander Sport GT 2.4L

The Outlander Sport GT with the 4B12, 2.4L MIVEC engine really ups the value proposition and almost transforms the vehicle. For only a 20 horsepower bump, along with 19 increased lb-ft of torque, it really makes the vehicle much easier to drive and quite a bit faster. 0-60 MPH times may not reveal a significant difference, but the power band is broader, torque is much more aplenty, and there's less throttle and revs needed to climb hills or pass cars. In manual mode, 80 MPH comes up much faster than in the 2.0L versions and there isn't a case of power fade at higher speeds as with the 2.0L. Off the line acceleration is very brisk and the CVT, which got retuned for this model year, is much more responsive with this engine I think due to the broader power band. Since Mitsubishi really held the line on pricing as best as it could while adding this new engine to the lineup, the value prospective increases significantly. It should sell well, aside from the slight ding in fuel economy (23 city/26hwy/24comb), assuming that mitsubishi gets the word out. Its worth a look if you find the 2.0L annoying, it addresses a lot of complaints with that engine. Again, its no rocket, but it certainly is a pleasant engine and entertaining.

i own the ES AWD 2.4L and I really am liking it. I have done some road trips and drove it mainly in 2wd mode. I got 29mpg and drove about 550 miles. commuting from work and back I get a combined 24 with heavier traffic and 25 with light traffic.
