Hi there. I see on eBay and Amazon that they are selling these head units with GPS built in. Some runs off of Android as well. Most are listed for ASX/RVR. Electronically, are they cross compatible with our U.S. models?
Was curious if anybody have installed these in their vehicles and how the experience went.
I understand that these will never be as well made as the more established brands such as Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. But I'm really interested in just having a basic navigation and backup camera system and the factory one is so expensive.
Here is a link to one example I'm talking about (if I'm not allowed to post links I will take it down) Thanks!
I have one of those android headunits made specifically for the ASX (Outlander Sport), fits like a glove. I loved it when I had it in the car, but have since removed it.
Gps was crazy accurate, never got that "gps drift" you sometimes get when you're using a cell phone (ex: you're on the highway and it randomly thinks you've magically bounced over to the outer road running parallel to you). Also had a few neat features such as speed limit warnings and such.
It had bluetooth, but was not hands free bluetooth. In which I mean, yes you could still use your steering wheel controls, but you could not hit the "voice" button and say something such as "Call mom." You had to physically type in the phone number on screen, or just pick up your phone and call the regular way.
Also, the radio seek function always bothered me, you couldn't just seek to the next available channel. You had to either type it in, or tap a visual "seek bar" and hope you landed somewhat close to the station you were hoping for. The only seek was between presets. Also on presets, you couldn't manually save a preset. You had to do a "station-find" and it would automatically save all stations it would find. You could manually delete the ones you didn't listen to, but it was inconvenient for when traveling.
All in all, I liked it. But it's currently sitting in my basement in the box, so I guess that says something.
I ended up buying the touchscreen factory unit from a fellow on ebay for $100. This way I got to keep the fuse handsfree system (being able to say 'call mom') and I could hook up a backup camera. Sure, I'd love navigation, but I really missed handsfree bluetooth when I used the aftermarket headunit.
Wow, thanks so much for taking the time for that review!
I don't use radio much so I wouldn't mind that part too much. I rather load up an SD card with music and pop it in. How does it fare in that regards?
How was the fitment? And was the wire harness in the back simply plug and play?
And can't believe you landed an OEM unit for $100!! I would hop on that in a heartbeat!
Did the OEM unit fit in the non-navi vehicles fine, or did you have to purchase an aftermarket dash kit?
Sorry for so many questions.
Oh one more. Are you selling the unit you're no longer using? If so, where are you located?
Honestly never used the SD card slot for music, always used my iPod instead. Which with the iPod, it loads the music almost instantly as opposed to the factory unit having to load it for a few minutes before allowing it to play. One more thing to note, the USB hookup feeds into your glovebox, I never even bothered trying to keep the USB in the armrest, so I'm not sure if that's possible other than rerouting the usb they give you to the armrest rather than the glovebox.
Fitment was great, although if you have the 15 model I'm not 100% sure how it would fit. If you gave me awhile, next time I see my mom I can try and hook it up in her 15 OS to see if it works. I know the 15 radio sits out a little farther than the previous years. Also, you would need the 2 silver accent pieces that run vertically. As those I had to pull off the original radio and transfer them to this aftermarket unit. The harness is complete plug and play though. Super easy, just plugs right in
The OEM touchscreen mounts the exact same as the OEM basic radio. Exact same dimensions and all. I just used the original dash kit that came with the car and mounted the new radio. If you're interested in the OEM touchscreen, maybe try a search for either the lancer unit or the Outlander unit (they're the exact same for basic touchscreen units).
Honestly, not sure if I'd sell it. I mean, it's just chilling in the basement at the moment, haha. So, possibly? I'm located in mid-Missouri though.
