Not a huge fan of the new front end, but in this color from this angle its not too bad.

Is the guy in the vehicle so underwhelmed he fell asleep?

So, the plan is to win the mass consumers back to their brand with a truly ugly and underpowered vehicle? Didn't GM try this tactic before with their Geo Metro?
Very similar, just needs a fresh coat of glossy cherry red paint.
There's a thread around here somewhere about the mirror turn signals, a quick search should find it.
But "yes and no" to your question. The turn signal lamps, like almost everything else on the vehicle, are controlled by the ETACS ECU (a bit more info HERE (Archive version, just in case)). Thus, you need to enable the "mirror turn signal" option in the software in order for them to function. You're not "flashing" the entire ECU, you're just accessing it and modifying the settings a little.

Another thing I just noticed in the mototrend link was the mention of ANOTHER CUV model.....
MT: Do you see Mitsubishi becoming a company that only builds crossovers in the future?
DS: I see it more focused on CUV. We’re talking about our next CUV now. We’re talking that we’ll take the Outlander and move it a little up, and I mean up in size, so it will become a little wider, a little longer, and then we’ll bring another car in between the Outlander Sport and the Outlander.
