you put a socket on top of the valve spring, then push down compressing the valve spring. Once it is compressed take a pair of needle nose and remove the valve spring keepers.

using the tool will only take longer, if the head is off the car and you dont need to worry about dropping a valve do it the fast way.

My look on the matter of drinking age....

If you have a Military ID the drinking age should be 18, for all else, 21.

You can defend our country, you can DIE for our country but you can't have a beer??!?? That's bulls**t

Chris you dont need to worry about dropping valves if the head is not on the car. Using the tool will still take longer no matter what style you have

On watercooled VW's when the head's off the car, you'd just set the head on a piece of cardboard on a sturdy bench, place a socket over the head, and proceed to hit firmly with a hammer.... The valve would pop down into the cardboard and the spring retainers would just fall out.
Fast and easy method. VW valves are perpendicular to a flat surface though, I don't know if Evo valves are slanted or not, you wouldn't want to do that if they are.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you somewhat on this one. I live by the Bremerton Shipyard, needless to say ALOT of navy guys. You know who the ones are that do some of the stupidist ****. Just because you are military doesn't mean you are responsible....I know a few that would probably be dead before they got a chance to serve if they could drink legally at 18.

Now if you are shipping out to the sandbox....well there should be exceptions then.
