GROUP BUY: Custom Trunk Enclosures for Subs & Amp

I was looking for an enclosure for my subwoofers and I came across Jivemotorsport's enclosure which is clean, simple, nice, and roomy. I contacted Josh and he said if I got myself and 5 other people to buy, the price would be $259 SHIPPED! Check out the pictures below, and don't be fooled, this doesn't only enclude the subwoofer mounts but also the plexgilass floor where you can mount your amplifier below. I wasn't feelin' the Mitsubishi logo so I asked if he can custom make mine as just a simple rectangle out of plexiglass.

Quoted from Jivemotorsports: "These trunk enclosures are AMAZING! We've sold a few of these to lancer enthusiests, and the feedback was better than we expected! Just take a look at these pics and you'll see why to chose us over your local audio shop. We'll send you the enclosure all ready fo you to put in your trunk for about HALF what your local shop would charge you to build and install it, PLUS, this is SHOW QUALITY. Very custom, very unique.

The corner sub boxes are backless, so they get wedged in and the center amp rack holds it all together. The less materials used, the less weight gained by your enclosure! We can cut them to fit 10" or 12" subs, and you can fit an amp that is up to 18" long under the plexiglass mitsubishi diamond! The enclosure is made of MDF and is wrapped in top quality speaker box carpet. This is 100% professional quality at a SUPER LOW price. We can also offer your choice of neon colors for an additional $25.

These boxes will fit ES, LS, OZ and Ralliart models from 02-04."
(I don't think it will fit the Evolution's, they have different wheel wells?)

Let me know what size you want (10" or 12"), what shape (Mitsubishi logo, rectangle), and if you want neons.

Would he sell just the floor and not the sub boxes... In the process of taking out my rear deck and putting some subs up there...

Those subs can't possibly sound good without a proper enclosure. Looks good thanks for the idea.

Ralliart - they actually sound as if they are enclosed simply becasue having them wedged in keeps them sounding sealed. The taillights rattled a little when I first installed everything, but it wasnt anything dynamat couldnt fix. Thanks for the comments!

Looks good... but I have a few gripes about it. People need to know a few things about this setup.

1) Since the baffle is simply wedged against the car's frame, the sound quality will suffer quite a bit due to air leaks. Also due to the "wedging" certain subwoofers will not fit due to the limited mounting depth in the corner like that.

2) Even if it is sealed simply by wedging it in the corner, the airspace available for the sub behind the baffle would be very limited and could adversely affect the performance of the sub. For instance if the airspace in the corner is 0.5cuft and your subwoofer needs 1cuft in a sealed enclosure, you run a major chance of overextending your subwoofer and causing permanent damage. Different brand subs require different amounts of airspace, so this prebuilt setup will not sound good for every type of subwoofer.

There's a ton of things I can point out but those are the main concerns with this type of setup. I'm not saying you shouldnt buy it... but take what i said into consideration before signing up for this group buy.

I'd say looks is about all it would do well. The false floor is a good place for an amp to overheat without proper cooling facilities, and plexi ain't it. If that false floor has some fans, or even vents, consider my criticism rebuffed, but I doubt that such a feature wouldn't be mentioned in an ad.

Also Kareem is correct in his statements that many subs will not reach optimum potential in such a setup. What I believe Jive may be going for is a sealed setup, as they have mentioned, but simply wedging a piece of MDF into a corner does not an airtight chamber make. "Why the hell does it need to be airtight Hank?" Well, for a few reasons, the most of which being acoustic suspension. Without a proper suspension in your car, you can drive. Sure. But without a proper suspension in your car can you drive well? Can you drive to the cars full potential? And what happens when you exceed your suspensions potential? That's right, you crash. Same with subs. Without a proper suspension, cones overextend, bottom out, and generally sound poor. Now if Jive has a way of sealing off the plates, again consider my foot in my mouth. But again, I would think such information would be in the ad.

I'm not saying don't buy it, because it does look quite nice, and I'm sure it would turn heads. But if SQ or SPL, or even SQL are what you're looking for, you may want to reconsider.

Infinity has a corner mount trunk subwoofer with a built in amp. I believe it is a "10 and it kind of looks like the Kicker set up that you can get with the SRT-4 but it sounds a lot better. They sell them at Circuit City for between 300-350 depending on the rebate.

Hank, thanks for your points... but I did want to point out (and wow, I cant believe I overlooked it in the ad) that the "false floor" is vented almost the entire way around. The top portion (which contains the plexi) rests on six 2"x4" legs. We secure it all together, but still, there is venting on all four sides of the amp. Overheating is not a problem at all with this enclosure.

On another note, I do have to say that you and Kareem are correct - this enclosure isnt for anyone who wants to pump a 1500watt system. Its more show than anything, and would sound fabulous with the right setup. I have not figured out the actual air space behind each enclosure, but with the setup in and the subs out I would have to say each side has at a good .75+ cubic feet. Im running audiobahn subs with an audiobahn amp and I love how it sounds!
