My car blew up in October/November. I'm going to start the motor build tomorrow. Pistons won;t be done for at least 4-6 weeks. Custom turbo setup won't be done for a month. Wheel setup I want will take a month or 2 to get to me.

I am cracking out. I've been slowly selling off everythign I wanted to (or needed to) upgrade on the car. Just picked up my Tein Flex's last night with EDFC. Defi gauges will be up for sale in a month. Trying to move my Bride seats to get other ones I like, planning a wire tuck possibly. The custom Volks I want are stupid expensive..................sigh

All of the above is one of the reasons I will not start a thread until its all complete......because I have no clue when that is. I would liek to drive my car this summer/Fall at some point. Thats my only deadline. If Rocks thread is any indicator then I'm not holding my breath. Thank god itsn ot my only vehicle.

Oh yeah and I'm scoping a08/09 1000RR CBR since i miss motorcycles almost as much as i miss my car.

Same here...

I want to start a thread of my build, but it will be so scattered apart its not even funny. So many factors come into play...

Good luck man. Especially on the Volks

Thanks.....not entirely sold on those yet. They are actually more expensive then CCW's but everyone seems to be going that route. I have a friend with a connection on HRE's but they only look good in ignorant offsets that the Evo can't have.

I'm between a set of Wed's, SSR's, CCW's or a few different model of Volks right now.

NO problem I would love to share that and actually might be some good information for the average JOE. Watching shop cars or people with good high paying jobs or credit card ****** is one thing and alot of folks dont get that insight to how much it actually cost to put one of these together and all the little total cost of things

Well to be honest when i got the evo finally was looking for one for like 2 years I was excited my first turboed car and i really just wanted to make it look better and do alittle preformace to it. Then i found this website by chance and a whole world opened up to what you can actually do to this car at that time my evo was sitting not being driven after i took it to the dealer and they found some issues with it.

missing alot of bolts(o2 housing spring bolts general bolts around manifold)
cat was not bolted on correctly
could not boost passed 15 psi
and at the time i did not know slightly cracked head

so i order the general parts i needed to fix what we knew about to get it in A1 condition so I thought all that happened withing 2 months of ownership. I was never planning on going extreme period. then I fiqured if i have to replace some of this stuff why not just get aftermarket things and get a tune later as I have NO tuners and EVO shops around where I live. closes is Evolution dynamics in texas and i did not know about them at the time.

So i ended up selling one of my eclpises so that funded the rage for new parts. got exhuast testpipe intercooler new radiator hoses cracked my radiator nipple attempting to install the hoese and had to ended up buying a new mishimoto radiator. I decided since i did that might as well get some intercooler pipes and air intake hence the injen system. I ended up seeing on this site at the time the FP RED just came out and was the new candy everybody had to have one sold out everywhere. I ended up making a ad for one and two people answered brand new red i bought one for 1695 way under cost at the time and I just whored it never planned on installing it.

At the same time i started driving the evo to work since im paying on it might as well use it then probaly 3 weeks into driving it daily it started jerking and felt like it was losing power and making a loud knocking sound. I had no clue what it was but car did not feel right at all and I had no way of checking it besides asking folks on this website. THUS BEGAIN my major build.

Since i had no shops and only a general ideal of what it could be I did not trust the car anymore i parked it for about 9 months during that time. I started collecting every part I could get my hands on. Talked to Evodave, Mellon tuning(when i answer phone) and Mike@awd during this time for information on what part to buy next and next and next. I wanted it all out of there YES everything in the enginebay had to go except the wiring harness and I did not know what the problem was so it was fire sale time.

I could have went the router most people take and put it all on credit and owe after it s all done but i did not want to have one big bill after it was over so i paid for everything in cash(paypal) so its paid off if i did not have all the funds it was not ment for me to have that part or see if seller would take partial payment now and rest later. I have to say i love this sites sale section. I FOUND EVERYTHING I NEEDED in there NEW and used and wheeled and dealed my way to perfection.

That took about 11 months to gather everything in the enginebay for replacement. so i was already used to not having the car already just starting it up twice a week driving it easy to store down the street and back. The good thing people need to realize about taking your time is new better parts can be released so you can get rid of old design for something new example the fp black came out and i made a deal with robert to just swap my new red out for the cost difference on the black plus the new install kit.

So at the time i had a name as the fastest closet on evom because that what i did with my parts as i steadly collected reason being I did not want to owe anything after it was said and done last thing i wanted to see was a bill over 10k knew my heart/head could not handle that. so also during that 11 months i was making new parts for the community(cf plate jdm rear guide mona lisa). i started looking for a shop i could tow my car to and get this all installed and maybe learn something in the process.

I was set to go to evo dynamics possible after talking to kevin once on the phone and during email. he never really asked me for insight on my car what was wrong with it why im doing it etc. did not seem like a friendly transaction and i did not like that. one of my friends i made on this site went there and had problems he told me about his car now being at jms racing in san antonio. so i was still looking for a shop and my uncle lived down there I told him to check them out let me know. I had some vacation coming up I had to use and I was itching to get all this **** out my closet and get the car in somebodies hands that could do something

Next thing i know i recieve a pm for jorge asking me to call them. So i did without me questioning he asked me all of the above about my car why im doing what im doing what i thought was wrong with it. from what i tell them what it could be pricing on labor and told me he would do what it took to earn my business if i came down there and garanteed a smooth tranaction with nothing overlooked or i could walk away. this sounded good and i began looking up the shop and found alot of happy customers but they were new to the evo game.

I decided hey this could be a good thing new shop owners new business they are all about reputation right now building clients. SO i was like what the hell if my evo could make the 7 hour drive down there bucking and yelling it was ment to be. SO the blue bomber got on get right and two months later i made the long haul down there so i was 13 months into a evo just sitting there making car payments on it and gathering replacement parts. For the first time in my evos life it drove perfect down there I only stopped one time for gas restroom beak and food(pizza) took a 15 minute breather and back on the road now mind you that was when i was 146 miles out from san antonio

Jorge answered the phone and keep updates on me and my journey down there. when i got there i had no clue how long my car would be down there i just knew they were bound to find some parts i missed getting or maybe more is wrong that i was unaware of. The head mech Jaquian(spelled wrong sorry lol) drove my car once he arrived and knew instanty what the jerking and loss of power was. Cracked head but he will know for sure once they take it apart. They were like man this was wrong this and this etc. All did was smile and say look in trunk and back seat. WHOA THAT WAS SO BADASS TO SAY THAT. all replacement built parts. So everybody was happy and shop did not have to order anything major.

i stayed down there like a week and a half going to the shop everyday helping them with other folks cars as they took mine apart to see if they could see any other problems. also during that time my supposed 2.3 arrived to the shop. Motor RX was kind enough to hold on to the motor until i found a shop to drop it off on could not put that in my closet after all. Come to find out it was a built 2.4 which suprised all of us and I was told sorry we sent wrong motor but you can return it. my car was already taken apart and I was like screw it i dont want to loose anymore time or take the chance of not getting a motor back. At the time scamming was high on this site and I was leary of everybody but i had already bought/paid for/recieve all those parts so i was like JMS make it work.

This would prove to be there first JMS 2.4 evo as they loved there 2.3s. So i had to buy extra parts I did not have or know what to buy. research research research. So it was apparent my build would not be completd while I was down there period. they ended up taking the 2.4 apart and sent off to be cleaned as they did not like the oil he used to keep it lubicated. so my time down there was up i thanked them and stated keep me updated and if any more parts are needed DONT buy them TELL ME and ill get them or send you money to get them and i dont want a parts bill.

this is where your year comes in to play. parts i did not buy frontcase fluidampr all the special 2.4 parts the motor ended up having a bad i beam rod and bearings were trash. Carlos took my turbo manifold o2 housing to power coat. Shop had other clients to do as well. Had to order a complete set of AEM guages found other minor issues with my car like oil pan was rusted out so bad it had holes in it. My buschur t/b was crap and broke and i even had to send it off to force fed to report it was such a bad job. Ending up getting sharkbites milspec t/b. Never got cams from the beginging so had to get some of those since they were in there and also found out my clutch needed to be rebuillt but sold it to another member on here. So I had to get another exedy twin to rebuild and parts for it took FOREVER like 3 months to come in strictly modified can contest to that etc i had to replace all these parts out of pocket. all this stuff took time. not one week so really the car got completed in october i just never told anybody because it was together for like 580miles then it ate a bearing turns out the crank was never balanced when I was told it was from motor rx. so i ending up having to replace all bearings again and another new i beam rod and another new 100mm crank so it was back down again for another 4 months waiting on parts and for the machine shop to have time to balance and put it all back together again.

Keep in mind all this stuff is extra money/time and expenses one cant plan for at all. So all i could do is roll with the punches by the time it was assembled again jms wanted to put some miles on it before pushing it hard or even fully tuning it to make sure everything was in perfect harmony. hence the 1k miles of average joe driving with a 25psi pump tune. Louisiana decided to open e85 stations down there so that was a surpise as I was all about pump gas. So i had to reorganize my build plan and inlcude bigger injectors and a double pumper now this marks december when it went to dyno and layed down those basic numbers limited only by my forge MBC and light spring. the dyno is in Austin not close to shop so spring must be changed out then taken back to get real numbers. Also during this time frame shop decided to move to better location bigger more room expaning due to more clients. hence more down time again. I cant just take off work whenever i feel like it as well so since it was the new year all time is locked down from jan-march so no way i could go get it even if i wanted to. I have to buy new tires as one got destroyed on the dyno as well. so might as well buy new rims and tires then so thats another expense I was not planing on since they are going to do that im change out brake pads in one go but they can do that once im down there.

So here we sit now in febuary with the blue bomber chilling waiting on the shop move to be completed so it can go back to austin redyno for pump tune and finish off e85 tune. Again moving a shop takes more time so in my situation unlike most others My hand was force to wait on parts parts and shop needs. nothing different could have been done to force this job to go quicker. Im glad i did not take ownership in october it would have never made it home with a bad crank and I would have probaly vented the block causing more frustration

Rushing to completion is always not the best course of action. things i hope people take away from this build are

1. Buy some used parts of certain things conserve money for other major things that could go wrong

2. even if your motor is built buy a good shop get it fully inspected again before dropping it in

3. Alot 3k for randomness that could occur doing a build

4. Alot for a back up car because anything can/will happen that can delay things further

5. a full build is quite costly and not really ideal once you start adding up the numbers. its best to buy most of the major parts yourself before you put your car down for a build(ill be posting my total list once i take ownership of my car)

6. above anything dont get discouraged when other issues are found or things dont work like they should. Let the shop work and breathe putting people on deadlines only proves to make for sloppy work as seen in alot of other peoples current builds having to get things redone over and over again.

Only thing left to do on the car performacewise is pump gas tune and finalize the e85 tune. Right now the shops focus is moving and doing minor tweaks of other customer cars etc during the move. So my only option is to wait

Real good write up Rock. Very true about rushing the people doing the work. Also it is a must to get all the needed parts for the build before starting the work.

Man, it really it... its crazy I think once you get one build done its pretty much good for future builds, since you could sell off parts that you dont need or would like to change.

Rock it seems if you had a block that wasn't questionable it could've saved you quite a bit of down time and cash.

Is MotorRX reputable and this a one off issue, are they rectifying the situation? Just curious. I'm working with a local machine shop that is pretty well versed in the 4G63/64 from a performance angle. They are doing all the machine work and will actually put the motor together. All we'll have to do is add the little stuff (sensors, water pump, timing belt)

Its was not all bad boss pistons were good block was etc. i got 2 new manley i beam rods for 190 and the new bearings were free mike@awd cut me a huge deal on a new crank so i did not look at it as a terrible situation at all. just a minor setback that was corrected. im sure things will go wrong in your build you cant complain because you still have to deal with the situation at hand. glad it happened on the shops watch not mine so again everything will be error free by the time i see it again thats the key

Hey homie dont wish bad ill on me......LOL.

I'm as flexible as possible for what MAY go wrong. I think the biggest issue for me is going to be time its going to take to get it all finished.
