MDJammins - EvoX Project
MDJammins - EvoX Project
Sup guys. I'm basically your Cousin apparently. I've always suspected that the EvoX being an aluminum block was similar to my Hyundai block. They are both made from the GEMA World Engines casting that were developed when Mitsu/Chrystler/Hyundai were all partnered together.
When they split paths, obviously we are still seeing some of the developed technologies on their vehicles that are being built now. Many things stayed the same between platforms.
So I'm happy to be able to call the EvoX part of my Fam.
Because nobody really supports MY platform. After all, it's a FWD, Grocery getting family sedan. Which was what I originally bought it for. I'm like your older, more responsible, kinda awkwardly dorky older cousin
I wanted to upgrade my turbo. We come stock with a twin scroll MHI TD04HL 19T that is cast in a SS Inconel exhaust manifold WITH the hot side of the turbo and an internal WG setup. After searching the webernetz for countless hours, the EvoX looked to be a turbo positioned in the same manner and the easiest cost effective way to upgrade my turbo and move my build along.
So I bought an EvoX TDO5 152G6 12T from a guy used with 16K miles for 300.00 shipped. I did good, I thought! Basically with a similar thread like this
Like, please help a brotha out!!! haha
In searching for the cheapest, cheapest possible EvoX twin scroll manifold. I came across XS-Power.
It was a manifold that was shinny (obviously lower quality) but it didn't matter because I WASNT even sure it would be usable. I just needed to confirm that the runners lined up and measure the depth to make sure I had room to fit the EvoX stock location manifolds behind my engine.
I ordered it. 200.00 well spent!!!!!!!!!
I received an email from the company - Basically saying - Hey, we got a new Cast SS pipe manifold we are releasing. Would you be interested in an upgrade. I explained that I don't even know for sure if it will fit. The company replied......I'll upgrade you for free - Just share my product if you are on the forums.
Quite honestly, I wasn't expecting much in terms of quality. But dayam! When I received it - I thought this was legit. I think it retails for 495.00 which isn't bad at all. So, as promised, I'm sharing my build project. And I'm going to provide some pictures of the manifold, measurements....Whatever you guys need or have questions about.
Details:
Stock location EvoX twin scroll
Stainless steal 3mm thick walls
42mm Diameter pipe
Tig Welded
10mm Thick Flange
Shipped with Stickers (very important
)
And both gaskets turbo/engine side
Pictures........

My Review so far.......
The inside of the runners need a little love. It's not polished to a smooth finish. But all the grunt work was done already. Gasket matched porting already done. The welds look pretty decent and I expect this unit will hold up expecially for my WHP expectations being sub 400.
Let me know what info you guys want - Measurements, additional pictures. I'll try to give you all the stuff you need.
Has anyone else bought/used one similar? Experience (not inviting a "From China" Bash. I frankly don't know where this was manufactured. I was just pleasantly surprised when all I was expecting was a possible "moch up" and throw away piece in the end.

Modded Canned tune: 13.50ET @ 107mph 2.2 60ft Same mods as above
Me and a buddy currently hold the world records for FASTEST in our class lol. Only because most people have no idea they can even run that fast. The Car Driver mag reviews put them at 14.8-15.5sec 1/4 mile. And 0-60's reviews terrible compared to actual as well.

The Auto is definitely holding me back.
The 13 gencoupes which run on the same turbo/displacement/boost are hitting 350wtq with custom tuning.
No matter what we do tuning wise, they have not figured out the TCU fully and we are capped at 265wtq. So definitely held back.
I'm hoping to one day soon figure out if the Evo transmission bolt patter is the same.
OR, have a custom tranny mount made for a 5speed GM manual tranny bolted up. The chassis was designed with V6 power in mind. So it appears to have room for drivelines to the rear

^true story.
So, the next thing I need to figure out is how my 2.25" ID upper charge pipes and Treadstone TR8 intercooler are going to handle the extra flow. The EvoX comes stock with 2.5" Hot and Cold side charge pipes, right?
I'm going to be contracting with you guys for a lot of info. I hope you can help a brotha out

Haven't gained much ground on the turbo build. But got some different wheels for the summer.
These are by KThree Projekt - Projekt One is the wheel name. Was their first release.

A picture of our High Pressure Fuel Rail. These type of rales and mechanical fuel pumps run off cam lobes are coming to a performance platform near you!!! Better believe Direct Injection is the wave of the future with downsizing displacement and making up for it with boost
- This also shows our Intake side of our Head. Looks like an Evo Manifold with Port Injection boost actuated is an option if I run out of injector. Speculation is that I will not reach over 340whp without running out of injector @ 2000psi fuel pressure. Or at least wall wetting comes into play as the pulse width shortens and fuel pressure increases with RPM.

And the HPFP running off the cam lobe. Two compression piston strokes per cam rotation. The injectors spray multiple times during the compression stroke to cool the cyl. And the majority of fuel is injected just before ignition at the very end of the compression stroke allowing for aggressive timing and the OEM 9.5:1 compression. The 380whp Pirelli World Challenge race car runs 10.5:1 on GTX3071R for reference.

OH - The whole reason I came on here lol
Does this engine/transmission mount look like it might favor a 6sp EvoX swap? See below pics....

Ah, and this question as well.
Does this electronic throttle body look like it might have the same bolt patter as the EvoX?
If I swapped to an X intake manifold, I would have to either swap my Throttle body...Adapter plate could be done, but here's to hoping it's maybe the same as many things seem to be on these GEMA engines.

Who would guess what the WHP figures would be using an X stock turbo with 9.5:1 Compression ratio ?
We make 235/235 to wheels on TDO4 19T at 17.4psi stock
275/260 to wheels at 20-21psi tuned
Wondering what to expect from this turbo, honestly?
Same displacement/bore/stroke - we tend to have leaner AFR tollerances but doesn't change much. We can run more aggressive timing by nature of the direct injection. But sure would be nice to spray some methanol into the Throttle Body on a boost actuated setup for cleaning the valves/intake tract and helping with knock.

Went to Carlisle Performance & Show this weekend.
My car was featured in Building R along with my boy's K5 Optima 2.0T which holds the 1/4 mile record so far at 13.03 @ 111mph with 2.19 60ft.
Had a good time. Also was offered a 2.4ltr short block that just had a little scratch and needs re-decking. Makes for an interesting future project

We had a car tuned down in Puerto Rico at Predator Performance (who's an AMS wholesaler down there) that made 301whp on a Mustang Dyno. That's the highest whp to date on our platform.
He's basically has full bolt-ons + AEM 100% Meth injection + An upgraded compressor wheel with a ported OE MHI TDO4HL 4S 19T turbo.
We expect this to be the first car to run in the <12sec 1/4 mile.
We've also had someone in our community build the bottom end of their engine. So I'm assuming a big turbo upgrade is coming soon.

Interesting thread. So are you planning on using the evo X trans? If they are interchangable that would mean you could do an AWD sonata/optima if you wanted and you had a donor car.
That blue optima makes me miss mine....

Of course I have thought about it a lot. But we would need a VERY cheap donor X and it might be cheaper to put an Optima shell on the X lol
