My fixer upper IX MR
Curious, what were your compression numbers?
Edit: I was asking because you mentioned oil around your exhaust gasket. I have the same issue. After some reading, some of the studs (notably the bottom center) run through oil galleys. The studs need a little hi temp sealant when you put them back in. I never knew that. I'll be picking up some ARPs and a new gasket when I put on a ported manifold.
Best of luck with the build! Always fun to watch someone getting their hands dirty.
Oh, and my wife hates my car, no worries. Just part of being a car guy. She's wonderful in many many many ways, but can't stand my Evo.

120-115-120-145. They were sealed correctly, but the oil was soaking the entire gasket to include the upper portion as well. No leaks from the head gasket or valve cover.
