Sumo’s Evo 7 (Revival)

The Oil Pump Hates Me! March 24th.

Well...it's been a while.

And with an exciting bedtime story… I'm back!

So, I was just casually driving home, with traffic here and there, no squeezing, nothing. Whilst driving, I heard a very odd sound, and thought it was coming from the bus behind me. Only until we got closer to the highway and they took a different route, I noticed the sound was still there.

This is the oddest experience ever! It sounded like knocking two wooden Jenga blocks together. I slowed down…sound goes away. Gradually sped back up (60mph again…no squeezing) the sound comes back, WTH!

1. I turn into my road, the idle drops…SWEET! Checks oil pressure, annnnd it’s GOOD!
2. Got into the parking lot and positioned the car to reverse park, the car stalls. OK!
3. Started the car back up, and the sound is gone!!!
4. Put up the windows to listen for any other noticeable sounds that I might have been familiar with (bad bearings)…none, 10 seconds later the sound comes back, but this time smoke starts coming out the hood.
5. Runs out quick to start to video.
6. Oil is everywhere!!! Spinning off the accessory belt and on to the exhaust manifold.
7. Runs and shuts off car, and went in to get the jack.
8. Jacked up the car, and removed the wheel. Oil is on the rim, oil is all over the wheel well, oil is on the control arm.... Oil! Oil! Oil!

What's funny is that I was buying parts here and there in order to have everything that was needed for when I was ready to build the motor in the future. Here are a few pics of the parts I accumulated before the Oil Pump issue.

I'm very excited to be doing this, my wallet wasn't. With things not sounding right, I started to fill up my online shopping cart and placed my order. Here's a few pictures of the goodies I just picked up today.

If the weather hopefully holds up, I'll be removing some parts from the engine bay, along with trying to remove the head this weekend.

After that, it's off to the mechanic. Whatever else I can do in the meantime with the head, I'll get done. Hopefully it doenst need to resurfaced, but I have the thought of doing it for the peace of mind, and not having to worry about stuff.

It's happening guys! A little sooner than expected ...but the 2.2L 4G63 is happening.

Thanks for the subscription man. My thread is definitely picture heavy lol. Intend to keep it that way.

As for that color, it's all burnt out now. The car is well in need of a paint job, whenever I get around to doing that.

i feel your pain man. my shopping carts look very similar to yours with a few differences. ive been long wanting to bring my car to the body shop for a couple of touch ups that are needed here and there around the body. sucks when the car is so stubborn and wants to be a racecar faster than u can make money.

look forward to seeing more man, i need to get a build thread going now ASAP!

Good Afternoon All,

Maybe an observation would be a better term


Before I ask, here’s a little back story.

So I had some custom Wiseco HD pistons done up for my old Evo 3 (old 4G63 motor). Everyone who has experience with Wiseco pistons should know about the little dimple on the top, which should determine which way the piston should face in the block (which should be the front).

Le Questions:

Giving that the Evo 7’s have the newer 4G63, this means the front is now on the opposite side of the motor (the left, when facing the car), which in turn should mean that that dimple no longer has any significance?

Aslo, would this mean that the thrust load is on the same side of the motor? 1. If yes, which side of the motor would that be? (Looking at the motor from the crank pulley side, would it be towards the front of the car or to the firewall)

Am I overthinking this?


My reason for saying this:
The Evo 3 and Evo 7 both have the exhaust and intake on the same side of the motor.
The Evo 3 and the Evo 7 both rotate clockwise.

Well... I went ahead and emailed Wiseco. These guys are fast with helping customers. So now my mind is at ease.



Small update on the car. I finally got the car towed to the "shop" today. (gigidy gigidy).

Great choice of parts, i'm very jealous of that k1 billet crank and it's nice that you were able to reuse the Wiseco evo 3 pistons on your 7. Looking forward to more!

I also have a small update on the motor build.

I stripped the cylinder head completely down, cleaned it up and sent it off to the local machine shop to get cleaned and resurfaced.

Good News & Bad News time!

When I went to pick up the head they happily informed me that they media blasted the head Great! Now I have to clean it after you all "cleaned" it. Oh and I HAVE to lap the valves.

As for the deck resurface... it will do. Unfortunately it's not the best, but it's all we have on island.

A friend of mine's has access to a parts washing machine, so I gave him some $ and ask for him to have it cleaned, as I would have liked the Machine shop to had done the first time around.

I'll get some pictures of the head once I get it back and start the re-assembly. I’ll also try to sneak a few shots of the block when I drop the motor parts off to my buddy who’s building the bottom end.

I had some free time time today to do the needed modifications to the new oil pump, so that I can use the English Racing Underdrive Oil Pump Gear.




Timing marker removal




Clearance between the removed marker and the ER Gear.




Width of the belt on the gear




Material from the oil pump casing that needed to be trimmed.

Job done. I rounded the edge because that's just the smart thing to do.
