Evo 9 Piranha

A little about me... I love Evo's I wanted one since I knew about them. I was that fanboy with posters on my wall of them. Eventually I was able to afford a 06 MR Wicked White with 60k miles. Sold it! Now this is my 2nd Evo, I never modified my 1st Evo just because I didn't know much about cars or how to do anything pretty much. So everything I've learned thru this whole process has been a learning experience and has definitely tested my patients. Multiple times I've been to that point where I think I'm done and have everything back together just to find one last thing wrong that keeps me down for another week or 2. This car has gone thru 3 builds so far just because I didn't know the process of building a fast car. Money spent that didn't need to be spent or buying the wrong parts. But I learned from this and wouldn't change anything. I cannot grasp how much I was able to learn over the year of building this car to have the knowledge I have now. I went from only knowing how to change oil to knowing how to build a motor. Thats crazy to me! Everything I've done to this car was attempted out of pure luck. ALL WORK WAS DONE BY ME. ME ONLY. All done by my trusty 200ish piece craftsman tool set. But without further ado, this is my learning process and mistakes all in one thread. Enjoy.

I picked this car up in Reno of Aug 17, 2016. Drove from Idaho one weekend and back the next day before work. Went with a couple of friends had fun of course in the casinos. We lost, typical right.

Made some modifications to the Uhaul trailer to get the car to fit.

all stock!

So I get the car home and my plans for the car go into action. The blend door on the heater core was broke so that needed replaced. So out came the dash!

the bar that braces the dash is very sharp and annoying to work with

the heater core needs replaced

its out!

When I bought the car it was tuned on e85 with 1000cc injectors. I believe it had 400hp from what I was told. Had a straight pipe, stock evo 9 turbo. Nobody could beat me on the streets! Little did I know I was in for a surprise when I got called out by a speed3. I got my *** handed to me in that race. I thought something was wrong with my car cuz I had never lost by that much So the build begins... I never wanted to loose again. So I bought a Sheepey bottom mount manifold, with a 5858 ball bearing turbo. (EVERYONE told me to go bigger, I should have listened). The same time I bought that my clutch went out so I bought a Quartermaster twin disk street 8 leg. Mind you I've never modified a car. I went into this build BLIND!! Learning to pull a transmission and muscling a transfercase is a headache while laying on the ground. Installing everything I see there is a hole in my intercooler from when I bought it. So needed a new one also. Also noticed my stock radiator at the top where the plastic molds to the aluminium was leaking. One thing after another...

Radiator and slim fan with hoses

Quartermaster twin disk 8 leg street with HTOB

Sheepey Hot parts kit

5858 Gen 2 Ball Bearing

Setup made 551hp 406tq on a stock block/head.

3" intercooler

I met a tuner out in Utah he drove to Idaho tuned the car and The 1st build was done. I was finished with my car finally. I was happy and couldn't be beat I put a smashing on that Speed3 and was happy. Then I got bored of 550hp A lot of people would say HOW?! well you simply do, it was a fun street car but I got the feel of power and boost I wanted more... One night out racing I blew my dipstick out and about 3qts of oil before I caught it. I got lazy and didn't install my catch cans. I paid for it. DO NOT GET LAZY WITH A EVO IT WILL BITE YOU IN THE A$$! I didn't spin a bearing but I did snap my alt tensioner and it was spinning around smashing everything thought I blew my motor. Sounded like rocks inside the engine. That prompt me to get all new timing not knowing when it was done last scared me. Down for 1 month while parts came in.

snapped the bottom end off

got all new timing, see what I did wrong with the tensioner pulley. had to pull everything again

While I was down I decided to sell my turbo kit and start building the motor for more power. I was set on 750hp or around there. I bought a 6266 gen2, pulled the motor and started building from the inside out. It became very expensive quick, not realizing most the stuff i had already bought needed to be replaced cuz it couldn't handle the power i wanted. So I sold most my stuff kept what i could and went to work. This time building for the future if I ever wanted it...

motor out!

I was down for a total of 9 months during the 2nd build. So far I've only drove the car for 2 months in the year I've owned it as my daily! Sometimes I need to think stuff out ha. Shoutout to my friends for the rides to work

As the parts were coming in. The motor was at the machine shop getting some love.

One day I started looking at pictures of Evo engine bays and really liked the look of a tucked wire harness. So I wanted to attempt it. What better time to learn then to learn on your daily that's been down forever right?!

stock harness. I was smart and didn't label anything when I pulled it.

Finally got everything stripped and labeled. About 50hrs into it so far.

don't need that. or that. hopefully not that...

70hrs

95hrs hopefully it works!

Got sold the wrong rods.

156mm rods. need 150mm

After finding someone that wanted the 156 and they had new 150 we traded straight across and back on track! added a week to my waiting.

Pistons are Wiseco 1400HD E85 Series 10:5.1 compression. Turbo Tuff I Beams.

I pulled all the stock fuel lines from the car and the charcoal canister. And ran -8an feed and -6an return. With a double pumper. 255 main and a 450 on a hobbs switch.

E98

Got the fuel lines all done and rerouted the battery to the trunk

installed a distribution block under the hood for everything to help hide some wires

All finished up!! Huge shoutout to Sheepey built for the great products!!

Not to bad for a guy who knew nothing right?!

So I get the base map put 500 miles on it. 3 oil changes. Drive it down to Utah to get it tuned and make some power!! While tuning, the car just PULLS I was like a fat kid in a candy store. Heaven. We get to 600hp at 32psi and do another pull. After the pull I'm shaking my head cuz I already knew what it was. I look at my tuner and he confirms it. Spun a bearing (insert A LOT of swear words here!!) so we limp the car back to the shop about 1/2 mile knowing its already screwed. We pull the plugs. 0 detonation. Bore scope and don't see any melted pistons. AFRs were 11.4 during the pull on E85. 0 Knock. Came down to clearance issues.

So I need a new crank. New oil pump. New oil cooler. New rod. New bearings. New piston rings. Have to rehone the block and rebalance.

Everything has been ordered and hopefully I can make it happen this time. The engine is now in different hands. This Evo has put me thru hell and has definitely put a hurt on the wallet. I've drove my car a total of 3 months or less since I've owned it. Somedays I just want to give up and sell it all. But I know in the end it'll be worth it right? I will keep this updated in the following weeks and months. Hopefully be up and running before Halloween or Thanksgiving.

The assembly of the motor and building the double pumper was not done by me. Everything else tho was. I should clarify that...

I know exactly how you're feeling. I just started pulling my motor after a long and expensive build because it's literally drinking oil. How was your oil consumption before the bearing spun? Let us know if the oil clearances were too loose or too tight. The rod and main bearing clearances for 500hp - 600hp builds should be between 0.0019" -0.0023".

my oil consumption wasn't noticeable before the spun bearing. and the clearances were to tight. .0015 on the mains. pretty much a built car with stock clearances.

puzzle pieces are arriving!

Cosworth headgasket, Rod/Main bearings

English racing oil gear, Mishimoto oil cooler

also found the pull that spun the bearing

640hp at 32psi was going for 700-750

Just waited a month and a half for my k1 crank to show up. So I get ahold of the company and they tell me there was a problem with the hardening process and a new batch of cranks wont be ready till the end of Dec. Would of been nice to know sooner... So I cancelled the order going to stick with a stock crank. Also sent off my 6266 to get upgraded to a 6466 pretty excited about that! Pics to come soon.

this is a hard question to answer because there is so many variables that go into a build. How much do you want to spend. Whats your power goals. Do you trust people to work on your car. Can you leave your car down for x amount of time. Things like that you have to take into consideration when building for power. Honestly if you don't know to much like I didn't I would pay reputable shop to do the work. You may pay more but at least they can put a warranty on it if its their fault that it broke. If you don't wanna pay a shop to do the work. Read Read Read follow others builds and see what problems they have so you can avoid it. Or your car will become a money pit. Not that Evos already aren't

Yeh, because I am a tight butt, Id probably go with something like a Nitto 2.2 stroker and DIY it http://www.nitto.com.au/products/str...cle=mitsubishi. But I read your excellent post here and expect there's much more to it then ordering the kit and replacing parts out.

A lot more complicated. You'll need the right clearances. loose is fast. Rod/Main clearances, piston to wall. stuff like that. I don't know much about it or else I would of built my own motor. Also the right tools to measure them.

Loose leads to accelerated wear. I'm guessing it was a rod bearing that went? You don't need to go looser than .0025-.003" (and .003" is considered very loose) on any bearing clearances. On my car that I beat the living hell out of my rod clearances are .0025" and my main clearances are still factory.

If I were you I'd have the crank ground or buy a used factory crank and call it a day. A lot cheaper and probably wouldn't end up waiting as long. Also, you shouldn't need to rehone the block or get new rings. Having the block thoroughly cleaned is the most important thing. Remove all oil galley plugs and run a nylon pipe brush though all of the oil galleys and spray them out with wd40 and brake clean multiple times. I can assure you that bearing material can and will get into almost every nook and cranny in your oiling system so making sure everything is 100% clean is key to keeping from repeating this situation. Also be sure to extensively clean your oil pan and consider buying a new pickup tube.

Best of luck with the rebuild!
