EVO 8 turbo SR20det swap E30 on Flex Fuel tuned Infinity

Update: getting a little play time in the car, practicing some launches is always fun.
Scored a little a little seat time on a fun jungle road.
Not an EVO but i'm using evo parts and want to share in a community that is still active and all about the BOOST! **if this needs to be moved to off topic that's fine as well.** Blog post that will get updates as the car changes and evolves... https://brewedmotorsports.com/sr20de...finity-on-e85/

I've always been a huge fan of the twin scroll Mitsubishi turbos found on EVO's 4 and up so when i ended up with a little BMW E30 and Nissan SR20det I knew i wanted to use an oem EVO turbo. Ideally the EVO X turbo as the fitment is much easier for a FR layout with the exhaust on the left side however while searching for a good price on an EVO X turbo a friend offered me an EVO 8 turbo which i ended up using. (not ideal do to the turbine housing outlet but easy enough to make work on the SR20det).

Initially i was building this car for competition use and very little to no road driving so most the interior bits got tossed. Fast forward to present day and she is now just a fun toy for the occasional outing with friends at the track or weekend cruise. (really wish i didn't toss some of those interior pieces now as they are hard to come by for a good price in Thailand where the car is located). Car is fully set up and tuned for 0 to 100% ethanol/gasoline blends and normally runs on pump "e85" which is actually E77 over here but available at most big gas stations.

Mods:
  • Evo 8 turbo
  • Velocity Element turbo manifold (custom for evo 8 turbo on SR20det)
  • Velocity Element S14 intake manifold and matching fuel rail.
  • AEM Infinity ECU (508) Sensors: Flex fuel, fuel pressure, EBCS, oil pressure, oil temp, wide band o2, 3.5 MAP, AIT pro, ECT, AEM trigger disc
  • Custom engine harness
  • Custom engine/trans mounts
  • Custom dual pass radiator and VE swirl pots
  • Custom catch can
  • Titanium cold air intake with head light inlet
  • Velocity Element Honda K24 ignition coil kit
  • Velocity Element Wide band knock sensor kit
  • Air to oil cooler mounted behind head light vent
  • Tube'd front end (the entire front end disassembles in minutes for easy access to everything you may need to adjust or replace during a race)
  • Sub frame connectors welded in made from rectangular 2mm tubing. (HUGE help for an old chassis like this)
  • Titanium radiator and front end support/frame (removable)
  • E34 complete rear subframe/dif/axles/suspension/brakes. (5x120 and much stronger than E30 or e36 Ti options.)
  • ATL 30 liter fuel cell
  • Radium fuel filter
  • AEM fuel pressure regulator
  • Injector Dynamics ID1050X injectors
  • AEM 400lph inline fuel pump
  • 18x10 +15mm wheels, 265/35/18 rear 245/40/18 front tires

Plans are to enjoy the car as much as possible with minimal service needed. ATM i'm limited to low boost by a slipping a clutch but already have a twin disc ORC clutch waiting to be installed! (then i'm sure i'll start destroying other drive line parts haha). I'm also on the hunt for an LSD or 2 as the current dif is welded and geared VERY low for the SR20det trans. Although i do believe with the new clutch and No Lift to Shift I will be able to hold full boost between gears even though RPM drops back down to only ~4k rpms on an up shift.

if you looks close at the turbo you can see how the turbine housing outlet is not ideal for the left side of a FR set up but i made a little elbow with Vband so it's easier to work with and you never have to deal with the 5 downpipe/turbo outlet bolts/nuts/studs.

Thats cool but why choke it with a stock turbo? A Red or green works soo much better then the stock unit for everything except Auto X.

It needs at least a 58mm turbine wheel IMO to breathe.

Stock turbo = FREE gift from a friend and easy to find/cheap to replace if ever needed.

I'm ok with the stock twin scroll turbo for this little SR20 as well because the main thing i'm after for this car is as much torque as possible before 4000rpm and anything over 350hp on the top end is fine. Super light car with a very low rear gear so it needs all the mid range 3500-4000 oomph she can get.

Out playing with launching the car, still need to pull some boost out of 1st and 2nd but she's super fun to drive as is with the wiggly butt.

Went for a little midnight run through Bangkok with the Liberty Walk Thailand crew. Need to get out for some more night cruises with a clean windshield and better camera!

While i do LOVE the stock EVO8 turbo i'm starting to lean towards making the conversion to a V-band turbo/manifold so i never have to think about hardware or gaskets again.

Have my eye on the SR20det Vband turbo manifold and a Garrett G25 660 turbo.

Anyone here using the G25 on their 2L evo? Post some video or log data if possible would love to see how it responds.

I tune an Evo 2 running a Pulsar Turbo G25-660 (basically a pretty quality copy of the Garrett) running a .72a/r T3 exhaust housing. That has mild cams and a stock bottom end and works very very well, we're seeing around 20psi by 3800rpm in 4th gear or closer to 4000rpm in 3rd so boost threshold on the 660 is clearly worse than the TD05, but transient response is excellent.... potentially as good or better than the stock turbo once its up over 4000rpm. I don't have any logs on hand and it's not my own car unfortunately so I can't go and get a log, but if I get a chance I can if interested.

Ok that is about what i have experienced on other similar sized engines with the G series. **currently E-tuning a ej25 with a G30 660 and WOW thing comes on FAST, very interested to see how it does at 20+ psi

Switched up to the super horn style outlet on the QRJ bov. It is louder now but i have yet to find a good way to capture the bov sound over engine/exhaust with go pro, phone or my little Sony. Might be a good excuse to get a little mic to play with.

Really thinking about that g30 and an external wastegate for the sr20det. Evo 8 turbo has been great but I’m itching for more and like the idea of only vband connections.

Right E30 is a fun chassis indeed, wheelbase is a bit short for a "drift car" imo but still super fun, just a little extra twitchy comparted to even my S13.
I'm up in the air on swapping to a V band G25 660 turbo and Future fab V-band turbo manifold OR just leave this car alone and build a new project.... haha we all know the money pit a new project is though!
