Yeah. I've head that one before. Amazing how realistic vinyl is these days. It fools a lot of people.

I already knew that my OEM Evo IX shift boot was vinyl, but I confirmed it when I removed and replaced it. Upon the inside surface you can see the fabric supporting the plastic "skin." Without removing it, you might also try pulling hard at the seams, and seeing the fabric inside there. Or just wet your finger and rub it onto the surface and note that it's not absorbent like real leather, which will darken with moisture.

You could pour water over it and it wouldn't darken the slightest bit. Why not? Because plastic doesn't change color when it's wet. But leather does.
