AMS EVO 8 Built 2.3 Shortblock, Eagle Ross ARP Clevite, $2895
yea i thought this was a steal too until i called ams and found out it was a junk block which had spun the balance shaft bearing... so they blocked it off and used the "stub shaft" even though their own webpage here states that using a stub shaft can lead to oil pump failure and excessive wear to bearings and other engine parts.
the ad is kinda misleading since it doesn't say it was a used or junk block, it actually says "brand new" which it is not. maybe the rods and pistons are new, but a junk block that broke and is now weakened is not brand new in my eyes.
btw fellas ams told me on the phone that this block can't be used with any turbo that makes more than 450 or 500 horsepower. what good is a stroker if you can't even run it with a 35R?
i appreciate andre@ams being honest and upfront with me on the phone about this but imho they should have all of that same info in the ad cuz it's really misleading and deceptive...

Ok guys let me explain a few things before this snowballs out of control.
A brand new AMS shortblock means it has never been run and has all new components in it...just like this motor has. It does not mean it has a brand new block from the dealer. Most Built motors out there use a core. We are no different.
This is new because it has not been run with new pistons rods, etc. its a new built shortblock
This is a budget motor. We are not hiding anything. If we were then why when you called were you given all the information about the motor. This is merely a budget motor that we had built because that was all that could be done with it. I'm sure there are allot of guys out there that just need a motor in the car and don't want to make 800 whp. The reason we are selling this so cheap is because its not like our normal engines that we can stand behind almost any HP level, because of the components its more of a basic unit for some guys out there that want to just do a mild build.
I don't know where you got the 400whp limit estimate from. This motor can safely make close to 600 whp. The rods are really the only limiting factor in the motor like dan said, And quite a few people have pushed Eagles to some crazy HP. We just don't recomend it.
Do we prefer a race balance shaft....Yes of course we do. Is it healthier for the oil pump, yes it is. Have people made great power on a stub shaft...Yes they have but we have a very well known policy of using a better product if a better product is available. We could not do that with this motor, hence the price. There is a reason why this motor is as cheap as it is. It's not made to brake any HP records. We couldn't not put a race balance shaft in the motor, plain and simple.
If you want a race shaft, Oliver rod stroker motor we do have them available as we advertise on our site and you can call in to purchase them. They are not however $2895.00 due to the extra money in components in the engine.
I think the term "shady" is being tossed around here for no good reason. We are not hiding anything. This is a fairly priced moderate engine build.
Nothing to hide here guys. Any and all interested parties can call in and get the full history on the engine.

When someone calls in to ask about the motor, full disclosure is given. Scott was just putting the motor on the site to get it out there. He is not a salesman, the salesman will explain the details on ANYTHING we are selling.
I am going to edit is post to give more information about the engine.
Now lets please leave this thread to discussion about interested parties.

If it were a NEW block, this thread wouldn't be 2 pages long and you wouldn't have people calling AMS shady. That's because if it were a NEW block, there would be no inferior stub shaft, no oil pump concerns, and no reason why it couldn't make 700-800+ WHP like other built 4G63s.
I didn't call you with my mechanic on the line to bust your chops. My car has been sitting since April with a blown motor so I do need a motor ASAP. I made what I believed to be a VERY fair offer of $3,000 shipped -- a whopping hundred bucks or so less than the asking price -- but it was refused because AMS claimed to "have more than that" into it. My mechanic feels I was fed a line of BS there and believes AMS cannot have anywhere close to $3K into it. This is because it started out as a broken block from what was likely a customer's car combined with the fact that Eagle rods and Ross pistons cost only $750. The crank comes out of a Galant and is also cheap. The machine work doesn't cost $2250. So where does the other $2K or so come from?
Andrew@AMS told me on the phone himself that this short block is not good for anything over 450-500 HP due to the stub shaft and oil pump concerns. He also said the biggest turbo I could run with it would be a T3/T4. These were his words, not mine.
When my mechanic told Andrew that he has never really seen a failure from running the stub shaft, Andrew responded by saying "you'd be surprised, I've seen at least a couple come through here."
How can you claim that the rods are "the only limiting factor" when your own website has a specific disclaimer concerning the stub shaft and possibility of oil pump failure?
Like I said in my original post, I appreciate Andrew being completely honest and up front with me on the phone, but the responses I am now seeing from AMS on this thread differ entirely from what I was told on the phone. I also think it would be best if you updated the original ad to contain all of the info I was given on the phone, such as the problem with the stub shaft and possible oil pump failure. Also, you need to update the thread to include info about the block being broken and how it was welded because of the spun balance shaft bearing. The ad still says the short block is new and it is far from new. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I believe in full disclosure up front. I don't think somebody should have to call AMS to get the other half of the information concering the short block, it should all be posted right up in the ad. This will also save people time and effort since they won't have to call AMS and have everything explained to them. Just my $.02 for what it's worth.

I dont mean to get you all fired up as that is not my intention. I think this is a simple case of what you consider a new and used motor.
I am sorry that Andrew gave you that information. I think he may of been confused. I will talk to him about this. It is honestly silly to think this motor can only take 450whp.... I mean a stock motor can take that. I am sorry that you were misinformed and we take 100% responsibility for this.
A built shortblock from companies like AMS and others uses a used REUSABLE motor. We have a machine shop inspect it, hone it or bore it if needed, Hot tank it and bring it back to working condition. It isnt that we pull the internals out and just put new ones in. This is why AMS and so many other companies require a good core or a core charge. These blocks are tested to make sure they are safe to use. If not then we use another one and throw that unit out and the customer must pay the core charge. Our track record on engine speaks for itself. We know what we are doing and you can trust us.
In this particular motors case we had to charge the customer that gave us the block a little bit as it is not a 100% Core, But it was still ok for someone looking for a very mild build. This is why we built it in this capacity. We are not trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes. It is very expensive to build a shortblock, With component cost, Machining cost and the labor to assemble the engine this shortblock is a STEAL of a deal.
We are not making you buy it, Nobody is trying to pull a fast on on you at all. The reason this thread is two pages is because we obviously have a difference of opinion. If you would like a standard AMS 2.3 Stroker motor we do have them avail able but they will be more then $2895.00 much more if you would like a brand new block from mitsubishi. A new block by itself will run you close to $1400.00 not to mention a new 2.4 crank Ross pistons, Eagle rods, bearings, ARP main studs and assembly. Clearly you can see that this engine is very fairly priced.
Our stroker kit alone goes for $2295.00
That means we are only $600 to machine the engine, O-ring the block, a new OEM oil pump and complete labor assembly the engine...I think you may have done the math wrong on this. that is a GREAT DEAL
Again I think most of this might stem from the fact that you think we just took out the old stuff and put in a new rotating assembly and that is simply not the case
I do agree scott should of put a little more detailed info about the engine up on the site, He has admitted that and we have remedied that. We are not perfect I assure you of that, but we will always make good on our mistakes.
You are obviously not interested in this engine and that is fine but I would kindly ask that we leave this topic alone now for a person that might be. I really do think we are merely stuck on a difference of opinion. I am very sorry you felt that you were mislead or deceived. As a company that is something that we simply do not do and again I am very sorry.
You are making this engine out to be very bad. If I had an evo an was looking to make about 550 whp I Would put this in my car all day long. It is a strong motor, can it be built to hold more HP.... Yes, but its also not being advertised as that. This is a good motor to make decent HP. We really did just thought it would be nice to offer someone a budget built 2.3 stroker. In the future we rethink that as its clear you feel wronged by this.
If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me or call me at the shop but again I think we are both beating a dead horse here.
