Cam gears vs. the red dot vs. MEGA BOOST.. Stage 1

First, I want to thank Shiv, Brett, Ken, and our unnamed shipper friend at Vishnu for phenomenal customer service and super fast shipping. I sat down at my desk at 8:30 central and our company courier had the cam gear box waiting for me. I put the ECU in last night, and will install the cam gears this weekend.

Next, the cam gears and the red dots: These cam gears were set at -5/-5 according to the hashes, so I don't have to adjust that at all, correct? The red dots are where you align the timing belt to the gears, right?

Lastly, MEGA BOOST question: I have an Autometer boost gauge, and am hoping it is inaccurate at higher boost levels. I pulled my MBC and then I hooked up the boost lines to the T fitting and made them look like the diagram where Ken sent me. To summarize:
-brass restricter is in the line that goes to the turbo's compressor housing.
-bottom of the T is a regular hose line (no restricter inside) and goes to the wastegate actuator arm.
-New Vishnu supplied line goes (with plastic side closer to solenoid) to the bottom connection on the factory boost control solenoid.

Here's my dilemma. In a quick WOT hit in fourth gear at just passed 3000rpm, the Autometer spikes to !!!!25psi!!!! for a second, then falls down immediately to 23, tapers to 21, then 19, then holds at 17. I did NOT redline the car, but saw that it wasn't going any lower than the 17psi and lifted. I can not hear any audible knocking, but before I had my MBC at 19psi everywhere, so seeing 25psi on this gauge is kinda stressing me out. I know Shiv's map is totally safe when I have the cam gears in, but I want to make sure I don;t have some sort of boost problem. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

your gauge is off, Autometers at high boost (anything over 17psi) are always off.

You should be able to spike to 22-23 because you are using the stage 1 map and then tapper off. About the 17 at red line I hold about 1.2 on 94% duty cycle on the stock exhaust. So about 17.2 is just right.

Your cool throw thoes gears in and enjoy

Eric

Pretty much the same thing MP5 told me in PM. That 25psi just scared the crap out of me. I'll throw the cam gears in and see how she goes. Thanks Eric!!

PS: Does my understanding of the cam gears being already set at -5/-5 and that I use the red dots to align at install seem correct to you?

Align the dots with the valve cover.

Set the pully to top dead center. BUY THE TOOL $8.55.

The tool to relax the tensioner is on my desk as I type this. I'm locked and ready to rock.

Ya well this brainiac still can't figure out how to make pictures smaller to post **** on the board.

I have so many things to show people. And a brand new Nikkon Dital camra. (THANKS DAD!)

I guess I need to read the instructions that came with the camra/software

My AutoMeter gauge is ridiculously inaccurate. Shiv told me to get rid of it after he saw how far off it was.

I can "peg" my 30PSI AutoMeter gauge without hitting boost cut. It's got to be off by at least 7-8 PSI.

Autometers suck. I use Greddy only. I hear Omori are great and the Defi's are off as well.

Omori
Greddy
Apexi
HKS

they are the only ones accurate on the markect today.

Thanks for the input jbrennen. I think its pretty accurate down low, as I'd hit boost cut in the colder air at 20.5psi before the XFlash, but that was with an intake too, which I have since pulled.

I had an Omori EGT in my WRX, and it was super accurate as was its probe. I wanted an Omori boost gauge, but could not locate the one I needed at the time. As soon as I can afford it, I'll get one of the new color changing ones. I only took the Autometer becasue it was cheap and matches my dash light color perfectly.

The last autometer gauge I saw in a car from last months MD dyno day was off by 7psi During the dyno run, it shop up to nearly 30psi and I almost choked on my tongue. I had to retest using two other gauges just to see what was going on.

Regards,
shiv
