To All Moderators/EvoM members
I've seen some "contact us" forms on websites that run a query against their FAQ's or knowledgebase before allowing the form user to send an email to the company. How about applying the same concept to our technical forums?
Make it so that when a user submits a new thread, that it automatically runs a search for the keywords from the thread body and returns it to the user. That way if he/she finds the answer in the search results that prevents a new thread on the same subject.

The problem has to do with post whoring in order to get to the limit needed to post in other areas. We see it all the time with the 50 post rule we have now.
It's mostly the poster's fault. From experience, most newbies are too lazy to search, use a little fuzzy logic, or even grasp the basic premise of reading comprehension. They WANT you to spoon feed them; then, they don't like your experience or reasoning and call you out like an ingrate bastard.
Ex: When I had bought my s13 and later S14, I search the appropriate board + topic. Whether it took me 10 mins or 3 days of mining data, I have always found my anwser w/o even posting 1 message.
EX2: Recently, there was another G63T swap thread, the MOD of that section linked to an awesome FAQ (timeless and fruitful info), but the person backhanded the info as garbage and not worthy of any more thought. Basically, the vanity of "I know what I'm doing . . . I'm going to prove to you all wrong."-type of mentality.
Ex3: It's like saying to the 240 guys: "How easy is it to do a RB swap?" without even searching. The vets on that board would jump on the newbie like a pack of hyenas, tearing into him like fodder.
BTW: wait till you guys get a loaded question like this: I really like the 420a because of its high potential and low cost. How easy is it to swap into a lancer? Oh hell, maybe, someone is crazy enough to put one in an Evo.
How are you guys going to respond to that one? Miragers have already faced that Q 3-4 times in the past 3 years. All those newbies didn't like the answer what 2g DSM'ers had already pioneered the answer - wire harness difference between Chrysler to Mitsu. If they don't like it, we point them to the neon board about how they use a PT cruiser's 2.4l over Mitsu's version for ease of swap.

Can you maybe just limit newbs to posting 50 or 100 times in existing threads before they can create a NEW thread?

hmm, I'm not sure that you couldn't find a thread related to just about every part or section of the car. I agree, however, that this is a possibility. What if someone has something to sell the first day they sign up? Is it not a privilage to be a member of this site? Should there not be some kind of training period (50 posts) before someone is released into the forum? There is for sales, and I understand there is a difference, I am just saying you may need to look at the bigger picture. Respectively of course, I mean only to make a suggestion not to debate the end result of a rule.

Therer really is no way to keep people from repeat posting (except for the site running a search for similar posts/threads like was stated earlier). Sure we could Delete every repeat post and just PM the thread starter the answer, or post the answer and close it, but new people that make repeat posts will definately wouldn't like having all of their threads deleted or closed. Even though they should have searched in the first place. But I do think the site searching for similar threads would help, especially if rather than bringing up the results, it just brought up a page saying "SEARCH!". That might help in making people less lazy and force them to use the search function...
That sounds like a good idea. Click on "new thread" and have a message pop up with "SEARCH" in big huge bold letters, then you get forwarded to the search page? Then what though. How would you track this? Or would this be for noobs only under a certain post count?
My only comment:
You can't fix stupid.
We the mods will continue to move threads to where they belong. That's why we're here. We apologize if we don't get to every inane repeat question fast enough, but we do our best. And no matter how many rules and hacks and stickies we make, people still won't read and will still make mistakes. It's called life.

not me^, to be sure! I was just trying to be constructive. To be honest with you I mostly ignore threads that could obviously be answered by searching anyway, so either way it doesn't bother me. Good luck with finding a solution though
