I think we should have a shout box on this forum. Other forums that have shout boxes feel more like a "community" and its easier way for people to ask simple questions instead of making noobie threads.

 

Well, we have a Newbie/FAQ forum and Off-Topic. Is this for something that wouldn't fit into those areas?

 

Nope, but chatting between members makes any board feel more like a community.

Do you know exactly what a shoutbox is? if not, heres an example... (new "shouts" show ontop and older ones gradually go down until they arent viewable anymore) in other words, read the convo from the bottom up if you just logged into your account.......its like text messaging on the top of a forum

Wow, OK. The idea I had wasn't at all like you describe. Sounds interesting though. I'm wondering how this could work with the amount of traffic we have on EvoM on any given day. I'll look into it and how it works on other forums, and the other Mods will check in here with their views.

FWIW, I ****ing hate shout boxes. I mean, I REALLY hate them. On a forum this active, it will not only be impossible to keep up with in any worthwhile form, but it will be a pain in the *** to moderate, and it WILL be abused for spam, ****, and foul language.

 

^ I like a shoutbox but I agree on a site this size it would be more trouble than it would be worth.

If we want chat, I suggest a full on IRC channel where at least we keep it off the main page. Pasted below is the text found in the shoutbox over at newtiburon . com, the site I used to frequent. Not exactly a wealth of knowledge, eh? And probably not what EvoM wants on its front page...

I have one on my forum but I only have ~ 1700 members www.racevideoforums.com so it's more manageable. On a forum this size it would scroll too damn fast to be usable

 

I'm on a forum that has 45k and its still pretty good....and a bot even posts a link to a thread when someone replies to any thraed throughout the entire forum!

 

Wow. That sounds horrible.

I'm not a big fan of shoutboxes. The value is pretty minimal, and the information posted is not archived for others to reference down the road. So getting technical help is self defeating.

As far as making a tighter community, we have regional forums and OT for 'chit chat'.
