Can we start IP banning?

I'll admit that I haven't been the coolest member on the board at times, but the amount of flaming and immature bullsh@t on this forum is seriously taking away from the enjoyment of being in this forum. I know the policies about following the rules and being banned and all, but I feel like it's not doing enough to prevent people from trolling, flaming, etc., because they just make a new name and come back holding a grudge.

I just wanna know if there's a reason why IP banning isn't done here, and if it's possible to start using it, because I feel that we need to start cracking down on the flame wars harder, because it's really getting outta hand.

Isn't there an ignore feature available on the board?

It seems to me like this would be the better solution, since it allows users to pick and choose whose posts they want to see.

There is that. I wasn't thinking of that at the moment.

Do you think it would be better for everyone to ignore a troll or flamer, or to keep one guy from being able to post in the first place?

But it is so easy to change your IP address. Anyone who has set up a Wireless network or a router can do it. It takes three commands in the DOS prompt to do it. It is not that big of a deturrent.

You have to know how to do it in the first place though. It's harder and takes more effort than simply making a new name. I just think we should do it cuz OT and some of the on-topic forums are goin to hell.

From what I've observed in the past months, most trolls tend to have mulitple IP's (some have AOL which shares there IP's throughout it's members). Thus, rendering the whole IP Ban feature useless.

Nonetheless we try to root out the bad ones to the best of our abilities.

Okay well, if we, lets say ban your email address, you can simply make a new one. Anytime, anywhere you want. For example Yahoo, they allow you to make an email address in seconds. Which again, seems useless.

We try to prevent flamers from returning, but in the end, they can do it if they really want to. The best thing is to have the members point them out to us by reporting posts, etc. That way we can react a lot faster to remove these types of threads.

The prob is, when you do that, they just come back and flame you even harder. Some people treat reporting like they're in kindergarten getting telled on.
